And there’s always the option of moving to Colorado or Washington.

Yay to the citizens of Colorado and Washington who say they don't need a doctor's note to grow or smoke cannabis.
Collectively, these companies represent billions in annual profits; and they perceived a material threat to their bottom lines in the labeling requirement, as evidenced by the gusher of cash they poured into defeating it.”
It's disappointing that people did not see this as a red flag. Why would they spend so much money and campaign so hard against having to say what is in their product? They spent more on that campaign than it would cost to update their labels. Way more.
I think people are so panicky about rising costs that they can't think beyond that. That fear is more pressing than the threat of GMOs.
It would be nice to just read a label and know what you are buying. But there are ways around this, There are watchdog groups in the US that keep up to date lists of companies who use GMOs. I look at it once in awhile and keep it in mind when shopping. Some names, like ConAgra, are real small on the label, and this company has gobbled up so many smaller food companies in the last ten years that it is not even funny - Rosarita Beans, for instance. Campbells, Hunts, Pepperidge Farms, Keebler, Pepsico, Ragu, Marie Callendars, Nestles, Hersheys.... those are other names to avoid.
There are companies that will label their product non GMO, so that is another thing to look for.
I thought that mandatory labeling might make people start asking questions. Maybe not, though.
Gilly, its funny that you mention cloned meat, because I was thinking about that today. The USDA approved cloned meat for sale in supermarkets without labelling. I think this was in 2007. It was mentioned on the news stations and nobody blinked an eye. Since then, I have lived in 3 different cities, and shopped at 9 different stores. I always ask the butchers if any of the meat that they carry is cloned...... and I swear.... it is like looking into the eyes of a hen. They have no idea what I am talking about.
There is a commercial from Wal-Mart advertising their steaks. They don't come right out and say it.... what they do is feed these people steaks and ask them what they think of it. Its a new kind of steak. Its a Wal-Mart steak. I bought some meat at a Wal Mart and when I cooked it something seemed synthetict. It was right after the USDA approval... so I went online and did a search on Wal Mart cloned meat.... lo and behold.... I was not the only one who wondered if it was cloned!!
As I understood the law, the meat does not have to be labelled, but if a customer asks, they have to be told. Good luck on finding someone in a supermarket who knows or not.
I was in 2 supermarkets today. One of them had gigantic grapes in a bag marked "Welchs". At the other store, there were more behemoth grapes, these ones were loose.... to grab and bag yourself. I have seen big grapes before, but these were the size of small key limes. I don't know if they were GMO or not, but they reminded me of Stars corncob geezer who doesn't want to tell people what they are buying because they may not want it.
I feel bad that these companies are steamrolling over us. They are finding cheaper ways of producing "food" but are not passing on the savings at all. What really bothers me though is what it is doing to earth, humans, animals, and plants. Apparently, eating this stuff can effect genetics, and the plants as nature made them are being bullied out of existence. So I ask myself.... is it all about profit?
Transhumanism? Yeah, that's what I said. That's why this proposition not passing gives me kind of a heavy heart. It almost feels like it is unstoppable now. Is it intentional, or a byproduct... I don't know. I think it could be intentional.
