Now there are other media too whose basic social role is quite different: it's diversion. There's the real mass media-the kinds that are aimed at, you know, Joe Six Pack -- that kind. The purpose of those media is just to dull people's brains.

This is an oversimplification, but for the eighty percent or whatever they are, the main thing is to divert them. To get them to watch National Football League. And to worry about "Mother With Child With Six Heads," or whatever you pick up on the supermarket stands and so on. Or look at astrology. Or get involved in fundamentalist stuff or something or other. Just get them away. Get them away from things that matter. And for that it's important to reduce their capacity to think.

Take, say, sports -- that's another crucial example of the indoctrination system, in my view. For one thing because it -- you know, it offers people something to pay attention to that's of no importance. That keeps them from worrying about things that matter to their lives that they might have some idea of doing something about. And in fact it's striking to see the intelligence that's used by ordinary people in [discussions of] sports [as opposed to political and social issues]. I mean, you listen to radio stations where people call in -- they have the most exotic information and understanding about all kind of arcane issues. And the press undoubtedly does a lot with this.

You know, I remember in high school, already I was pretty old. I suddenly asked myself at one point, why do I care if my high school team wins the football game? I mean, I don't know anybody on the team, you know? I mean, they have nothing to do with me, I mean, why I am cheering for my team? It doesn't mean any -- it doesn't make sense. But the point is, it does make sense: it's a way of building up irrational attitudes of submission to authority, and group cohesion behind leadership elements -- in fact, it's training in irrational jingoism. That's also a feature of competitive sports. I think if you look closely at these things, I think, typically, they do have functions, and that's why energy is devoted to supporting them and creating a basis for them and advertisers are willing to pay for them and so on.
The true measure of a man is not his intelligence or how high he rises in this freak establishment. The true measure of a man is this: how quickly he can respond to the needs of others and how much of himself he can give - Philip K. Dick.

Football is popular so it attracts sponsorship advertising and revenue at the turnstiles. This big money is why coaches get big money. The players get big money because they are in a union.

This is self-evident. The question should be...WHY does it attract big money? The answer is in the OP.

Example of a great salary extension for a player who hasn't been hall of fame caliber yet

Your right on the fans makes that money flow, if that's what I think you mean, the Cowboy's have a huge south of the border fan base, and this count's in the merchandise sales and popularity of anything Dallas Cowboy related.

I don't know much of anything about UK sport teams, but the fan base in Manchester must be amazing

Well, they have fans literally all over the world. They're coining it in from their Korean credit card, for example:

Manchester United Spends A Lot Of Money Hopefully Not With This

There are some articles and videos here about the NFL being run socialistically (as are other American sports) I would call it Communist, but it's the same basic principle:

www.sportsgrid.com/nfl/daily-show-nfl-socialism/
www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2012/02/01/...fraser_davidson.html
www.cbssports.com/nfl/blog/eye-on-footba...ch-a-bad-thing-video
www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2011/01/..._like_socialism.html

Football / soccer is definitely not run that way.

I'm curious to hear your personal opinion on this, specifically if you think UK soccer should be run socialistically like US sports.

I wouldn't say that soccer should be run that way because it's logistically impossible, but I think the way the NFL is run is brilliant. In addition, the fact that they enable the worst team at the end of every season to have first choice of the best young players is great. This could never even conceivably happen in soccer.

The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you.. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables so that, they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!

That's why in a thread once I asked RA about coaching., there is a good foot in the door at many schools that are double A or below for coaches with some credentials

That was an interesting piece of information that you posted.

All you need to know about soccer is that the biggest teams hoover up all the money and best players and don't let anyone else get a look in.

Alex Ferguson's last chewed gum sold for 390,000 pounds on Ebay
New Delhi: In one of the most bizarre bits of news related to Alex Ferguson since he retired as coach of Manchester United, what is allegedly the last stick of chewing gum chewed by the legendary football tactician has been sold for a whopping £390,000 on online auction site Ebay, with all proceeds going to charity.
According to reports in the UK media, Ferguson's chewing gum was somehow retrieved from The Hawthorns after being he spat it out following his final game before retirement against West Brom last Sunday.
The Ebay listing reads thus: "Used chewing gum: RARE. Recovered from The Hawthorns. Clear perspex/wooden case. Unofficial merchandise, rumoured to belong to Sir Alex. After 1,500 games of intense chewing as manager of Man Utd, here lies Fegie's (sic) last piece of chewing gum. All proceeds go to the MU Foundation charity. Happy bidding."
