'Terrorism' obviously means just about anything. Note the use of a special branch of police for spooks.

Lets face it, Snowden is not the target, the target is anyone thinking of whistleblowing in future.

Absolutely

And anybody reporting it too

But they obviously had zero suspicion that David was associated with a terrorist organization or involved in any terrorist plot. Instead, they spent their time interrogating him about the NSA reporting which Laura Poitras, the Guardian and I are doing, as well the content of the electronic products he was carrying. They completely abused their own terrorism law for reasons having nothing whatsoever to do with terrorism: a potent reminder of how often governments lie when they claim that they need powers to stop "the terrorists", and how dangerous it is to vest unchecked power with political officials in its name.

Worse, they kept David detained right up until the last minute: for the full 9 hours, something they very rarely do. Only at the last minute did they finally release him. We spent all day - as every hour passed - worried that he would be arrested and charged under a terrorism statute. This was obviously designed to send a message of intimidation to those of us working journalistically on reporting on the NSA and its British counterpart, the GCHQ.

Before letting him go, they seized numerous possessions of his, including his laptop, his cellphone, various video game consoles, DVDs, USB sticks, and other materials. They did not say when they would return any of it, or if they would.

This is obviously a rather profound escalation of their attacks on the news-gathering process and journalism. It's bad enough to prosecute and imprison sources. It's worse still to imprison journalists who report the truth. But to start detaining the family members and loved ones of journalists is simply despotic. Even the Mafia had ethical rules against targeting the family members of people they felt threatened by. But the UK puppets and their owners in the US national security state obviously are unconstrained by even those minimal scruples.

If the UK and US governments believe that tactics like this are going to deter or intimidate us in any way from continuing to report aggressively on what these documents reveal, they are beyond deluded. If anything, it will have only the opposite effect: to embolden us even further. Beyond that, every time the US and UK governments show their true character to the world - when they prevent the Bolivian President's plane from flying safely home, when they threaten journalists with prosecution, when they engage in behavior like what they did today - all they do is helpfully underscore why it's so dangerous to allow them to exercise vast, unchecked spying power in the dark.

David was unable to call me because his phone and laptop are now with UK authorities. So I don't yet know what they told him. But the Guardian's lawyer was able to speak with him immediately upon his release, and told me that, while a bit distressed from the ordeal, he was in very good spirits and quite defiant, and he asked the lawyer to convey that defiance to me. I already share it, as I'm certain US and UK authorities will soon see.

It is a mistake to think, however, that this sort of thing does indeed have support amongst the public. A certain section are fully behind a fascist police state

And here is a few comments from the public
Well done U.K Police.
They should not waste time detaining these criminals, shoot them on sight!
Job well done. 2 good reasons to detain him. 1 - he is bound to be carrying material his journalist lover would like him to carry. 2 - he is no real spouse just some plaything for people of easy virtue. Therefore people of low virtue cannot be trusted at all especially when they travel to Berlin to talk to an American film producer involved in the whole scheme of things! We should not be so naive to think that all journalists are paragons of virtue. Methinks they protest too much odious as they both are!
No idea how anyone can say its an abuse of powers or not... ...as NONE OF US know the grounds for his detention at this time. It's not done for a laugh, and only a handful of people are detained under this power each year. I realise these facts won't suit those who want to cry out over anything they see.

Look at this shit, lol...

Authoritarians left or right, all have the same blinkered vision. Terrorism killed 3000 people in the US in 9/2001 and thats the most frightening thing we have to deal with. Far more than the amount of people killed by crap food, road accidents..

Oh what the heck here's the CDC's own stats:

Number of deaths for leading causes of death:
Heart disease: 597,689
Cancer: 574,743
Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 138,080
Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 129,476
Accidents (unintentional injuries): 120,859
Alzheimer's disease: 83,494
Diabetes: 69,071
Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 50,476
Influenza and Pneumonia: 50,097
Intentional self-harm (suicide): 38,364

Terrorism didn't even make the top 100 by the looks.

I wonder how many of those deaths above can be attributed to monsanto or merck ?

You can tell Grunwald's a good journalist, as he manages to clearly convey in that one, brief sentence, that not only is he a terrorist who encourages & celebrates murder for political purpose, but so too are his country's leaders, in whom he has every confidence of committing said murder.

Best round the lot of them up and transport them to Guantanamo Bay, indefinitely, for 'questioning'!

Exactly yep. Though these guys make up the rules as they go along so they're not terrorists ofc.

Said drone strike could for example be in London and they'd jack off at the thought.

So...the detention was "legally and procedurally sound".

Well it would be wouldnt it. The terrorism act is designed to be so vague that literally anyone can fall foul of it at the whim of the state...
The issue here is that this highlights just how bad these statutes are. Deliberately bad.
The issue here is that morality and ethics have been thrown out the window in order to spread fear amongst those who may stand up to the state.
The issue here is that the state is out of control. It is a bullying, aggressive behemoth.
The issue here is that instead of challenging acts like this, the msm downplays it.
The issue here is we are systematically being locked down. Dissent of any kind will not be tolerated in the very near future.
Fuck you Anderson. Fuck you filth. Fuck all of you power crazed tossers.

Dan Hodges

A self declared neo-Blairite, Telegraph journalist and Boris Jonson voter has just appeared on the BBC calling for new legislation to give police more powers to stop and search people for carrying sensitive information.

And here is his hatchet piece in which the truth is literally turned on its head

Why does being a relative of Glenn Greenwald place you above the law?

David Miranda Set To Take Legal Action Against UK Over Detention

Glenn Greenwald's partner David Miranda is set to take legal action against the British government over his nine-hour detention at Heathrow airport on Sunday.

The Guardian, which employs Greenwald and had paid for Miranda's travel through Europe, said it was "supportive" of the move but was not leading it.

In a statement, Kate Goold, a lawyer from Bindmans, the law firm representing Miranda, said, "We are most concerned about the unlawful way in which these powers were used and the chilling effect this will have on freedom of expression."

Miranda's electronic equipment was confiscated during his detention and has not been returned. Lawyers are trying to prevent UK police from searching the materials:

Alan Rusbridger, editor of the Guardian, told the BBC that there would also be a legal challenge about whether or not British police were entitled to seize Miranda's possessions in the first place.

The detention has become a major political controversy in Britain. Members of the opposition Labour Party have called for an investigation into why Miranda was held.

The Home Office, which has authority over policing, and the Metropolitan Police, which interrogated Miranda, both defended the action, with Scotland Yard calling it "legally and procedurally sound."

The White House and Downing Street have both said they were aware that the detention was going to take place.
