I gave it a rating of 'meh'. I think I found the reactions of fans on the internet to director interpretations of characters more entertaining, and disturbing to boot. Some people were literally angry about what race a certain character was because it wasn't how they pictured them. I wish people would get that heated over things that actually mattered...you know like humanitarianism, and having their rights stripped away.

Battle Royal the Original Japanese Film Hunger Games was based on with English Subs.
Quite violent and graphic in places!

Quick question... this is coming through Netflix to me, is it okay for a 6 year old to watch or am I waiting until he goes to bed?

He likes Transformers and the Avengers, etc... so violence, bad language, etc... is not a problem. But with the idea of kids being pitted against each other...is it suitable?

No it's not suitable I think it may be rated 18. I can't see that many six year olds would watch a jap film with English subs, The movie I linked to is on youtube so it's about as easily accessible as it gets.

Thanks Frog... I would fully expect my 6 year old to watch a Japanese movie for no other reason than the strange language (he takes after me and is a bit strange). But I was actually talking about the new one hehe. I'll assume your response applies to it as well.

The hunger games does cover some mutual ground to battle royale but it is not a remake. It is part of a series of books which my wife enjoyed reading. They are classed as teen fiction but my wife tells me they are smart teen fiction.

Battle royale is great but I don't think that makes the hunger games bad. I quite enjoyed it for what it is. The books are aimed at teens and I think they cover some important issues. You can also say running man as an influence but that is like comparing all war films.
I liked it.

Okay, having watched it... not appropriate for children (the beginning is fine, but once the hunting starts it gets bloody). As a movie, it could have been better.

On to the other shit I noticed in it... 1) the 13 districts (only 12 of which compete)...eerily similar to what I heard about TPTB and their whole North American Union, European Union bullshit, and the anteing up kids between the ages of 12 and 18 for killing each other sounds like something they'd do just for shits and giggles. 2) during this whole escapade of picking the children, they have kids standing in rows watching a TV playing out war scenes and talking about rebellion and this is why the kids have to go kill each other, blah blah blah...looks like mass brainwashing to me (you rebel, you kill each other for our entertainment, don't rebel, etc...).

I don' t think this is programming at all. The hunger games are more like American idol, just more extreme. The capital is where all the 1% live. There are some real issues handled in this movie. The story continues too of course.

Oh, I didn't mean programming for the world... I meant programming of those kids in the movie (the characters). Show them what resistance got them, give them a stupid reason to go off and kill each other, try and program them into not rebelling again.

But I suppose it could be applied to as things are now... people rebel, get beat down by the cops and government to try and say no more rebelling. We got places being attacked by "rebels" while the terrorists (governments) blow shit sky high and then blame the rebels for fighting against them. I can just see the plot in the movie playing out in real life with the bleak looking future we have right now.

I'm watching this movie on Netflix right now....

Don't know what else to say but "lol" as i'm only halfway thru the movie at this point.

I will try to make a few serious comments about my thoughts of the film when it's finished but i doubt it.
