People in the United states who wish to buy books online might want to consider Powells bookstore instead of Amazon. Obviously this is up to you individually but personally I prefer independent stores especially in light of some of amazon`s business practices.
www.greenamerica.org/programs/responsibl...r/company.cfm?id=184

On top of that it is always good to have more than one place to buy things.

So I would suggest Powells to Americans and perhaps people can offer up some alternatives for other countries.

www.powells.com/
"We have a social responsibility to the community and to our industry to fight censorship, promote literary awareness and encourage authors and their works." from Powell's Mission Statement

Powell's Books is committed to the strength of a well-informed community and supports numerous organizations working to ensure the unimpeded sharing of ideas and knowledge. Donating books, time and money, Powell's Books is a leader in the support of public schools and libraries, adult literacy programs, children's reading programs, free speech issues, and civil rights causes.

Thanks chaps.

I'd still rather have a physical, knock-on-wood shop to visit though. Alas, it seems I am alone in this desire... :(

@Abs, I agree with you about having a real bookshop.

Also, we're lucky to still have a library here too, and it's always busy.

Ordering books on the internet is great, and they'e cheaper than in the shops.

However, I can spend hours browsing around Waterstones in town. If I worked there, I'd find the customers a bit of a nuisance. :D

There used to be a Borders near me, which was great because they had stationary & things as well as books, and there was a Starbucks upstairs where you could sit & have a brew. Me & the kids would spend hours there, and usually came out with several books apiece, though we'd only intended on one each. It was over-priced though, and it's closed down now. If they weren't so greedy with their prices, they'd have got more custom, I'm sure. We'd have gone more regularly for a start.

I much prefer a physical book than an ebook. Plus, it's easy to pass a proper book on to someone else when you've read it. I'll never get a kindle for that reason.

I agree with you on all counts particularly real books over ebooks. However here where i live the only book stores really close are big chains and i prefer smaller book stores. There is one in Atlanta i want to check out though.

I can share in excess of 400 books in digital form and you don't need a kindle to read them plus we will both have a copy. :)

https://www.booksshouldbefree.com have loads of books that can be shared legally in both written and audio formats. The written books are available for several devices and can be read on a PC. They provide books to suit all tastes and age groups.

I still have to get on a bus though, so I shall continue to sulk. Thank you.

It's a nice day out and there is probably one there within 5 miles of you so it should be walkable. Charity shops are also a good place for books and they are dirt cheap, apparently there are plenty of those local to you because you have mentioned how they have taken over the high street in the past. Now stop sulking and go get a good book and some exercise. :)

I'm currently listening to this...
