Self-sufficiency is the state of not requiring any aid, support, or interaction, for survival; it is therefore a type of personal or collective autonomy. The term self-sufficiency is usually applied to varieties of sustainable living in which nothing is consumed outside of what is produced by the self-sufficient individuals. Examples of attempts at self-sufficiency include simple living, homesteading, off-the-grid, survivalism, DIY ethic and the back-to-the-land movement. Practices that enable or aid self-sufficiency include autonomous building, permaculture, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy. The term is also applied to limited forms of self-sufficiency, for example growing one's own food or becoming economically independent of state subsidies. Yesterday we had the annual sheep shearing event. Started at 09.15 and finished 16.15, on a hot summers day :) Myself along with relations do our small flock and there larger one. Worming and trimming of the hoofs as well. The euwes and lambs are wormed.

Rounded them up first got them penned in and then set up the shearing block and the bags for the wool to go into.

The sheep then get channeled into the holding pen and pulled out through a door on the side. We had 2 people on the sheers, 1 a relation.

Then off we go !!

2 at it.In the background you can see the large bags where the fleeces are put into after shearing. They are then sold .

This is what the fleece looks like after shearing. Then the ass bit is pulled away, normally a bit shitty , the fleece is then rolled and put into the bags.

We sheared by hand right up until dad retired and sold up, I could use a couple of black tegs for making some jumpers etc this winter, we have run out of black fleece apart from a few Jacob's.

Have you seen those shearing balance harnesses that some farmer invented, it creates a counter balance so the bending bit is less strenuous, works on a pulley system.
