Self-sufficiency is the state of not requiring any aid, support, or interaction, for survival; it is therefore a type of personal or collective autonomy. The term self-sufficiency is usually applied to varieties of sustainable living in which nothing is consumed outside of what is produced by the self-sufficient individuals. Examples of attempts at self-sufficiency include simple living, homesteading, off-the-grid, survivalism, DIY ethic and the back-to-the-land movement. Practices that enable or aid self-sufficiency include autonomous building, permaculture, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy. The term is also applied to limited forms of self-sufficiency, for example growing one's own food or becoming economically independent of state subsidies. Well the night after finishing all the hard digging and carrying I went for a bit of a potter, forking in some manure and peat (I know, mrs oioioi's 'gift' to the patch) and ended up with a bad case of sciatica!

I had that for about 3 weeks in the whole of my right leg... most painful thing ever & couldn't walk.
Acupuncture really helped, so did a spliff.

I met a lad once that said he'd had it in his face! :aargh:

Funny you should say that with the ganj, as I said I awoke on the morning of our expected departure to an island, we'd already decided we weren't gonna risk taking any for such a short break, anyway, first night back it had eased a bit from the morning we left but I was still hobbling with a stick. Had a couple of smokes, took myself to bed then started to convince myself it must have all been psychosomatic as I could feel NO discomfort and started some soul searching as to what could have caused my mind to inflict that much pain on me. Next morning I was hobbling again, then I put 2+2 together..... :psketti:

Similar story... I'd not been able to get out of the house to get sorted for 3 weeks & was going bonkers. The pain was like a thigh strain, a groin strain, a twisted knee, being kicked in the shin really hard repeatedly, a twisted ankle, and dislocated toes. I was nearly in tears at one point. Anyway, eventually I bit the bullet and got a taxi out to get sorted... within 30 mins of having some nice bud I was thinking the pain out of my leg in the pub. Then I was fine again...

Sorry dawn, missed that one :emb:

I'm just at the about to choose stage, tree surgeons due this week to take out a few overhanging branches to give me even more sunlight :) I've currently got a couple of pepper plants and an aubergine plant in a box, spotted my first little teeny tiny pepper today :D Some pumpkins to get the kids interested, some tobacco, hopefully spuds, cabbage, lettuce, toms, maybe grapes at some point, beans (especially fava), courgettes, probably not as many things as I'd like to with the space available!

Hi there oi. Sorry to hear about your sciatic 'run in'. As one therapist to another (incase you had forgotten from 'the other place')
I wish I had seen this earlier. One of the best things I learnt during my training over 20 years ago was how to treat sciatica.
It works an absolute treat and clients can do it for themselves.....well, I am all for empowering people to take care and treat their own health issues.
Let me know, and I'll do my best to give you the description of what to do if you like.

Hi Jane, of course I hadn't forgotten and yes, any help would be appreciated. I've been pinching the achilles and trying to guide mrs oioioi on massage and to some extent it has lessened but it's still there niggling and some days gnawing away!

OK here you go.....
If you can sit as you men do with the ankle of your bad leg resting on the knee of your good leg so your bad leg is relaxed. If you can't do this get Mrs Oi to follow the rest of the instructions.

Using some oil/cream trace a line in the channel between your shin bone and your calf muscle on the INSIDE of the bone from your ankle bone to your knee. now, using your thumb using a wave motion work your way up the inside of your shin bone. You will find 'dents', these are 'lack of energy' points and could be very sore. Once you get up to your knee use your other thumb to repeat the wave pattern down from your knee to your ankle. some of those 'no energy' spots might not be there on your down massage. Tip...keep the edge of your thumb against your shin bone. You keep repeating this up and down massage using alternative thumbs until the 'sore spots' don't feel too sore. Repeat the whole process 2-3 more times a day.
Now if I remember correctly, you also use essential oils yes? If you do add some juniper oil to the carrier/cream. You should know how to work out the dosage. Juniper oil removes 'blockages'.
Those 'sore spots' should start easing off quite quickly. Think 'energy flow' here. As the energy begins to flow so those dents and divots will 'fill up' and the chanel will feel a lot smoother.

hope my explanation is ok and it helps.

PS...there are a couple of other more manipulation type things and tsubo spots you could try, but as one of them involves your sitting bone...you can't do them yourself! lol! You should be able to get it sorted with the above. As is the rule with sciatica...the longer it is 'bruised' the longer it takes to heal...hopefully we have caught it soon enough. I have seen someone get up after being wheelchair bound just short of a week of starting this treatment

Ahoy oi!

Tsubo spots are just one term used for acupressure/acupuncture points. The sitting bones in this case are the bones under the cheeks of your arse...your coccyx completing the trio, as in a tripod! :D

I would be very interested of course to know how you get on.
