Self-sufficiency is the state of not requiring any aid, support, or interaction, for survival; it is therefore a type of personal or collective autonomy. The term self-sufficiency is usually applied to varieties of sustainable living in which nothing is consumed outside of what is produced by the self-sufficient individuals. Examples of attempts at self-sufficiency include simple living, homesteading, off-the-grid, survivalism, DIY ethic and the back-to-the-land movement. Practices that enable or aid self-sufficiency include autonomous building, permaculture, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy. The term is also applied to limited forms of self-sufficiency, for example growing one's own food or becoming economically independent of state subsidies. While I don't think it is admirable to lay down and die, there is something to be said to have the courage to face facts and know when you're fkn dead.

I see a lot of survivalists talking about surviving eruptions and plagues and locusts or whatever mentally going :AAAAHHHH: at the thought of our mortality

I have news for these survivalists: nobody survives forever. Armageddon or no, the SHTF every minute of every day and the World Ends as We Know It every time.

I see here a few things: present company excluded, I see a lot of fear-based money spinning "self-help" books buying hacks even bigger yachts and ranches. The poor saps swallow these potential doomsday scenarios which, while not entirely impossible, are nevertheless a rather improbable future sold as certainties.

I am as sceptical of these mountebanks as I am of Planet fucking Nibiru and the fucking Rapture.

Yes your right its money from people who do have a few shillings generally to spare.
All my experience is gained on the ground starting from the age of 11 when a group of us were sent to Gometra(small deserted Island) of Mull for a week with a tent and what we could carry. Then most weekends spent in Brecons or Black mountains up to the age of 15 in all weathers.
Then of course the military training and the warzones, gives you a heads up of what to expect. and also you know your capabilities of when push comes to shove.
When I mention warzones most have been as a freelance, not under a strict military regime like the Brit or French army.
For example one day wanted a drink in the town which was about 20 miles away, our group was denied by the local commander a vehicle to go. So a mine was placed under his own vehicle and we took him outside to show him, and made it clear next time he would not be shown.
A nice vehicle was forthcoming for our all expenses paid drink and scoff :D

That's quite funny, you accusing me of being thick. I'm sure you'll find many people that agree with you! BTW, it's 'you're just plain thick'.
Global catastrophe = breakdown of society = no fucking electric, energy sources, food distrubution, law and order, military, .
So rather funny how thousands of people managed in the Balkans for extended period without electric by using other means, guess what seem a happy bunch now.
Remind me...when the Balkans occurred, was there a global catastrophe at the time? If there is a global breakdown in energy supply virtually no-one will survive, rest assured.
SO you lecturing me again on your internet bedroom dwelling knowledge :killinme:
Warlords run the region or city or village you fucking idiot, but you know better  If there is a breakdown in society thats what happens, has Italy had a breakdown or Britain.....and you claim to be the forum intellect :killinme:
Believe whatever you want about Africa, mate. You're wrong.

Besides which, there isn't going to be some fucking breakdown in society in Britain, unless there is some truly catastrophic incident. In which case, most people will die. You seem to be almost wishing for that to happen, which is quite odd and unstable behaviour.
As you said yoiu hope a nuke drops on you, basicaly because you have the inability to survive without electric due to living in the bedroom on the pc 24/7 thats the simple fact. :D
I've already said that I couldn't survive without electricity, nor would I want to. Nor would I want to survive a full-scale nuclear war. I'm sure you're well aware that 'prepping' for that would be pointless.

From healthy, top-of-the class popular good looking kid to pale sickly anaemic patient getting a slow painful transfusion of 4 pints of blood.

Weirdly enough I was very peaceful at the time.

I don't know there could be a global outage of electricity, combined with a global pandemic virus and full-scale nuclear war which will decimate British society overnight, although there will be lots of survivors who will turn into warlords, you know like the ones who run Africa, not the trillions of dollars of industrial interests that actually run the place.

We won't have a very happy new year then...

Tbf Merc, those trillion dollar warlords Wub refers to were probably the ones paying your wages whilst you were dominating local 'commanders' with nice war machine tech like mines eh :)

Well, judging from some of the forums I have been reading, there is a significant group of survivalists that yearn and long for just such a scenario. Some are coy about it and some fairly "bring it on!". I believe they THINK that they would be perfectly happy.

Perhaps to try out their new hardware.

Perhaps to feel vindication regarding the "unbelievers" and "sheeple"

Perhaps the chance to establish their own little community sans undesirable creeds, politics, race, sexualty etc

Perhaps the hope of "cleansing" the planet and establishing a 1000 years of "how it ought to be"

Perhaps all of the above or some other fucked up reason to want to see such calamity.

For whatever reason, for some the threat/promise of a apocalypse is one part fear and one part misanthropic genocidal wet dream

This is definitely true. Unfortunately, they have recognised the disease but not the cure. The problem is that some people come to think that because they're controlled by TPTB things like industrialisation and technology are evil. Of course, that isn't true at all, they vastly improve our lives, what is evil is the way that they're controlled and run in elitist fashion. This could easily be changed, the whole way that the society is run could be changed tomorrow if people simply realised it.

@WuB
I couldn't comment about the volcanic caldera, I've no idea what the consequences are.
Here's a link to a BBC drama/docu on Yellowstone. Keep in mind that just this last month geologists have recalculated the magma chamber is 2 and a half times bigger than the worst case scenario depicted in the prog. Thought link might help

As to the 1607 tsunami, it also occurred during this 'blip' in UK weather patterns which lasted 50 years......with devastating consequences....
booty.org.uk/booty.weather/climate/1600_1649.htm
2 page report.....as it covers a tsunami that hit east coast Scotland because of a landslip in Norway.

OK, I know the infrastructure is different today...but it's still vulnerable and will collapse be destroyed if such events happen again. The Yellowstone one doesn't bare thinking about, especially as it's NOT even the most destructive supervolcano even with the new calculations, that title is held by Lake Toba. The largest volcano in the world is known as a 'dead colossus', and currently the second biggest we know of in our solar system is called Tamu Massif in the Pacific....ring of fire anyone?

As to CME/EMP's then yes they can affect humans although there is no record at present that there has ever been a big enough one that would have caused a MEE.....
