False memory planted in mouse's brain

The feat will help to reveal how more complex false memories, such as of sexual abuse or alien abduction, can arise in people

Scientists have implanted a false memory in the brains of mice in an experiment that they hope will shed light on the well-documented phenomenon whereby people "remember" events or experiences that have never happened.

False memories are a major problem with witness statements in courts of law. Defendants have often been convicted of offences based on eyewitness testimony, only to have their convictions later overturned when DNA or some other corroborating evidence is brought to bear.

In order to study how these false memories might form in the human brain, Susumu Tonagawa, a neuroscientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his team encoded memories in the brains of mice by manipulating individual neurons. He described the results of the study in the latest edition of the journal Science.
Leaving aside the obvious, does anyone have any ethical problems with an experiment which involves manipulating the neuronal make-up of the brains of mice? No, it's just me, that's okay then.

That's a disservice to witches sb.
I can't think of a word for this. I can think of lots of them in strings though.

Another glaring example of how certain people have no fucking respect.
And do the funders think we are dumb enough to think this line of research stops there?

They're trying to implant a false memory in everyone at the moment by getting them to think that bankers didn't cause the recession.

As a slight aside... I was reading a sound engineering book a couple of years ago... it talked of a guy in a workhouse building who was having problems with rats. Somebody had captured and tortured a rat, and recorded it... then played it back loudly into the workhouse & all the rats fucked off. It's likely that all the other rats would have otherwise been poisoned.
It reminds me of Spock's old dilemma, 'the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few'. In this case it seems like they're trying to justify torturing an animal so that some more crimes can be solved, and at the same time attempting to remove flaws that are what makes us who who are in the first place.

Isn't that how they catch parrots though? Catch one, cut it and put it back and apparently all the other parrots flock around the injured one due to the distressing noise it's making, then they catch the rest.

Saw that years ago on the telly and it was one of those things that sticks with you :(

Any testing on animals is sick full stop. And have we really gained anything that's made a huge difference in our lives, things that we absolutely couldn't do without to survive?

Health wise, we're in a worse state than we ever have been.
But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma,
a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

I'm not even a big animal lover, I don't have any pets, but I just find this repulsive. I find it absolutely ridiculous that the people involved are pretending to be concerned about ethics. It's already unethical to manipulate a mouse's brain purely for reasons of experimentation. I find it totally unacceptable. If you're going to do it, you'd better have a bloody better reason than "sometimes people think they've been kidnapped by aliens, but they haven't". So fucking what? That's not an acceptable reason to fuck around with the neuronal structure of a living creature. It makes me sad and angry, I can't imagine how someone who is a real lover of animals would feel about it.

The horrors that have been inflicted "in the name of science" are virtually unthinkable to me.

But you see where this story could be heading though.

"Say what? You were routinely tortured and abused in Guantanamo bay? Nonsense, we found out through abusing mice that you're making it all up."
But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma,
a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.
