The number of people relying on food banks to survive has tripled over the last year, according to new figures.

The Trussell Trust, which runs 400 food banks across the UK, said it handed out supplies to more than 350,000 people between April and September this year.

A third of those being helped were children, and a third needed food following a delay in the payment of benefits.

THE number of people in Scotland who are relying on foodbanks has soared almost sixfold in the past year, according to a charity.

Cuts to the benefits system are thought to be the cause of the steep rise, and the Trussell Trust, which runs 25 foodbanks, has called on Prime Minister David Cameron to hold a national inquiry into food poverty.

A total of 23,073 Scots, including 6608 children, received food parcels between April and September this year, the trust said. During the same period in 2012 there were 4021 requests for assistance, including from 1235 youngsters.

The trust warned that some recipients are so poor they have had to return produce that needs cooking because they cannot afford the electricity to heat it up.
Maybe a government spokesman could stand in the queue and tell people that they should feel extremely lucky about their present predicament because there's actually been a massive economic recovery.
The true measure of a man is not his intelligence or how high he rises in this freak establishment. The true measure of a man is this: how quickly he can respond to the needs of others and how much of himself he can give - Philip K. Dick.

"A spokesman for the Department for Work & Pensions said there was no "robust" evidence to suggest growing use of foodbanks is linked to welfare reform."

Yes, I know 2nd hand of someone who was literally starving who got one of the food parcels but had no gas or elecricity to cook the food with.

and yes, once winter kicks in there will be people in serious trouble. And deaths. And any of those fat freaks overspending by £1,000's of tax payers' cash on their fucking 'snacks expense claims' like Pickles' dept. dud recently should be sacked & made to pay it back with steep interest. Disgusting, shameless freeloaders. That's what they are, as much as that's how they'd love the genuinely needy to be perceived.

:chuckle:

I wonder how people would have reacted in the 80s or 90s if told by 2013 there would be thousands of people needing food banks in the UK? I think it's a disgrace and only highlights the great chasm between rich and poor. I mean, is the UK fast becoming a third world nation? Meanwhile those running the show claim expenses for cars, hotels, travel, whores/gigolos (;) ) and second home mortgages ( ) but make sure those on benefits - including those with disabilities - struggle on in poverty.

you know theres a survival mode that happens when you are poor and hungry. just looking for whatever you can eat, its hard. to eat ramen noodles or beans every other day. reheating old coffee. it becomes all you can think about. everything grows in value so much. milk is so expensive, you could buy 72 eggs and eat for 3 weeks and milk isnt a luxury item.

Well. BT have just informed me that they are hiking the price of their line rental by 3.5% in January......so that's another bill increase that's going to affect pretty much everyone, because no matter who supplies your phone connection/internet, BT always gets the line rental no?
