Has anyone been watching this on BBC?

It's a 3 part series, so far it's been the first two, next monday is Marx.
#1 John Meynard Keynes
#2 Friedrich Hayek
#3 Karl Marx

What do you know about economics?

It surprised me (;) ) how little the alternative media mentions the likes of Keynes or Hayek, considering politicians adhering to their theories have been so prominent in the last few decades, and made such large and long reaching changes, most power players on the political scene in the last 40years have noted the large influence either Hayek or Keynes played in their personal philosophy ie Hayek influencing Thatcher, Reagan or the Keynesian American financial planners like Greenspan etc.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_spirits_%28Keynes%29

"Animal spirits" is the term John Maynard Keynes used in his 1936 book The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money to describe emotions which influence human behavior and can be measured in terms of consumer confidence. Trust is also included or produced by "animal spirits". Several articles and at least two books with a focus on "animal spirits" were published in 2008 and 2009 as a part of the Keynesian resurgence.[1][2]

The original passage by Keynes reads:
Even apart from the instability due to speculation, there is the instability due to the characteristic of human nature that a large proportion of our positive activities depend on spontaneous optimism rather than mathematical expectations, whether moral or hedonistic or economic. Most, probably, of our decisions to do something positive, the full consequences of which will be drawn out over many days to come, can only be taken as the result of animal spirits – a spontaneous urge to action rather than inaction, and not as the outcome of a weighted average of quantitative benefits multiplied by quantitative probabilities.
[3]

Keynes seems to be referencing David Hume's term for spontaneous motivation. The term itself is drawn from the Latin spiritus animales which may be interpreted as the spirit (or fluid) that drives human thought, feeling and action.
The meanings that are the most directly practical are the ones that are sacrificed: the flavor, aroma and touch are abolished to the profit of the delusions that permanently lead sight and hearing astray.

I know little of economics and I don't watch TV, but thank you for posting. Very interesting stuff.

Caught the second half of the first one...mistake, couldn't pick up the thread, it was like watching a foreign film to me, so made no mental note to watch the second one.
Oh well, back to Max Keiser for me! :D

Why was it like watching a foreign film?

Actually the politicians do NOT adhere to those earlier ideas. :D
