Cameron announces another squeeze on welfare

PM says he will look again at abolishing housing benefit for the under-25s

Elsewhere, after already announcing £18bn of welfare cuts, Cameron signalled that the government was coming back for more. He suggested that he would look again at abolishing housing benefit for the under-25s and at reducing working age welfare more generally (universal benefits for the elderly are, for now, safe).

Meanwhile...
Great Britain wins gold for corporate welfare

From A4E to G4S, a new kind of enterprise has emerged – the private company that takes over the easiest and most profitable services, while leaving the state to deal with anything that’s too difficult or expensive, writes Alan Shipman

Many of the biggest firms have made a silent transition from public limited company (PLC) to publicly insulated company (PIC) – one that is not allowed to fail because it has been entrusted with services essential to the nation’s economic and social health. The banks, on various forms of state-funded life support since 2008, are an unusually visible and costly example. But public agencies have also been forced to step back in to (among other cases) restore communication when privatised court translators were tongue-tied, deep-clean hospital wards left superbugged by contract cleaners, and try to restore justice when privatised forensic testers lost the plot.

Wallpaper tycoon George Osborne's speech at the Tory party conference about cutting a further 10£ million from the welfare budget was appalling this guy is a fucking scoundrel.

Privilege:
Privilege differs from conditions of overt prejudice, in which a dominant group actively seeks to oppress or suppress another group for its own advantage. Instead, theories of privilege suggest that the privileged group views its social, cultural, and economic experiences as a norm that everyone should experience, rather than as an advantaged position that must be maintained at the expense of others. This normative assumption implicitly constrains discussions of social inequality within the dominant discourse: such explanations are limited to factors specific to disadvantaged groups — who are viewed as having failed to achieve the norm — and solutions focus on what can be done to help those groups achieve the 'normal' standards experienced by the dominant group.

In essence, theories of privilege assert that discourses on social inequality do not truly discuss differences between privileged and marginalized groups, but only discuss the failure of marginalized groups to achieve normal social status, effectively turning inequality into an issue that does not involve the dominant group. In this sense it is similar to confirmation biases and the fundamental attribution error in social psychology.

Tory conference: George Osborne in £10bn benefit cut vow

The government is determined to cut a further £10bn from the benefits budget to fight the deficit, Chancellor George Osborne has told the Tory conference.

One idea he suggested was limiting the number of children in a family that should be supported on benefits.

He said the better-off would pay more in taxes, but the budget could not be balanced "on the wallets of the rich".

I'm quite confident the exact same scenario would unravel had the lib dems or the labour party won the election.

Well Thatcher was all for Victorian Values.

Now we have like a flashback of that with Brideshead Revisited and Upstairs Downstairs being echoed in the God awful Northanger Abbey.

Oh waht fun it was being in service and how the lords and ladies were fine.

None of your Dickensian tales of abuse and suffereing of children and the vulnerable. Oh no.

None of you Catherine Cookson tales of raping the parlour maid by young Lord Johnny Gotwood.

Yeah, that's the Zeitgeist getting sold throught the Beeb with its fawning over the royals.

that's your "pleb" comments from your ministers

that's your Bullingdon Club boys in power.

I don't doubt it. Looking at New Labour's track record, it is as laughable an alternative to Tories as Democrats are to Republicans. :suicide:

There would have been differences, more of this budget deficit reduction we're having would have come from taxing the rich, I do agree though that's why many are working within the LP to combat and force a departure from Neo-Liberal economic policies.

I appreciate your faith in these folks but I don't share it. :sorry:

The third way was a one way compromise that brought the so-called centre swinging so far over to the right that two political parties on both sides of the Atlantic are unrecognisable.

Besides, whichever party may have wanted to do whatever, but they would not have been allowed to because they no longer run the show.

This goes to explain why a whole plethora of differing parties and governments across Europe have made similar policies.

Foreign policy is the same.

Do you think if Labour had got in, we would have invaded Iraq.

No wait...

There would have been absolutely no difference whatsoever to any of these policies had the so-called 'Liberal Democrats' or 'Labour' party formed a majority government. Britain is completely broke and will never recover economically, unless the banking-military-industrial complex is torn down. The job of the government is merely to deflect attention away from the blindingly obvious reality that private banks are shafting us every day of our lives, and get us fighting among ourselves. It has always worked, it will probably continue to work, and until people realise this, nothing will change in the slightest. You will continue to see the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, whatever the colour of the ties of the bureaucrats are.

That just about sums it up WUB. I don't think we're going to come out of this recession. Alan Watts is a doom and gloom merchant, but he seems to be spot on about a lot of things.

The benefit reforms are shocking. It's supposedly all about making work pay, but that's clearly bollocks.

Everyone in the UK in 2012 should have the right to a roof over their heads and food. I'm deeply shocked that so many people don't share this view, and I don't mean the rich either.
