No, I don't think everyone has gone and got themselves into loads of debt. Maybe it's just the people I know in my offline life, but I know a surprising amount of people who don't have credit cards and who don't borrow money. I know a lot of people who will save for things rather than borrow and if they don't have the money, they don't buy it.

It could just be that I choose friends who are old fashioned gimmers like myself.

One thing I'm really grateful to my parents for is indoctrinating me into avoiding unnecessary debt. Unless it's something like a mortgage (you'll never buy a house outright) save up and buy it. If you can't afford it, don't buy it.

Of course some people cannot avoid debt - like when people end up going to loan sharks because they can't afford to pay the bills. There is the distinction between massive credit card bills for holdidays abroad and new kitchens and simply being unable to pay for the basics.

I read some interesting stuff this week about the UK losing its AAA credit rating, interest rates, savings and debt. The upshot was, that many people consider it a better investment to pay off their debts right now, because of low interest rates, rather than saving. A lot of people are of the opinion that their savings are losing value, because of inflation. I have no idea how true this is though.

Even gold merely keeps the same value, no-one actually ever makes any profit from leaving their money with bankers lol.

I make better % returns on money at car boot sales actually and on lower amounts than the bankers would be willing to even open a savings account :D

My dad used to volunteer for the CAB for a while after he retired. He said he got an endless stream of people with debt problems. It baffled him because the borrowing mindset was so totally alien to him.

I would agree middle class is basically both about position/education and money.

Middle class is basically small business owners and on up to and including some small time millionaires which is a quite substantial number of people.

You have to go to the billionaire bracket and royal bloodlines for upper class.

Anyone who is a PAYE worker including those on 100k salary are still working class imho because they actually take home less than the SME owner on 60k.

Nobody has a choice these days. Everyone needs a bank account for just about anything that involves getting paid or paying others. I think I read somewhere that not having a bank account is a sign on social exclusion.
