Just from a quick browse of Dicks forum rules I saw something very wrong...
4. This is not a democracy.
I put in a lot of work and destroyed many braincells setting it up and road-testing it, I pay rent for the server it lives on, I pay the bandwidth costs, and I spend some of what little spare time I get on forum maintenance. All of which means it's my ball and I get to pick the game. So it's not a democracy, it's a benign dictatorship. You want a democracy, it's ridiculously simple to get one - go and set one up.

As always with these things my friend, the devil is in the detail.

For instance the sections dealing with the editing, amending etc of contributions could feasibly expose the site to inadvertently breaching https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moral_rights_%28copyright_law%29

Personally, I would have no issue with a clause which places the legal responsibilities clearly back onto the contributor.

For example something along the lines of:

You are legally responsible for all contributions you make to sanctumzone.co.uk

Sanctumzone.co.uk does not accept any liability arising in connection with any material contributed to the website by any users or third parties, including liability for defamation, copyright infringement, infringement of moral rights, breach of privacy or inaccurate or incomplete material.

(I would take legal advice before considering implementing the above, I am not a lawyer).

As to the use of contributors work for any potential promotion, or event, for me the solution to that one is straightforward, just ask first.

I really do appreciate the work that has gone into this site so far and the difficulties faced. I also really appreciate the opportunity offered to discuss concerns and toss around ideas in an attempt to resolve them.

The problem is that's like comparing apples and oranges. One it's not intended to be a democratic community orientated site. Two part of the concept of this site is to develop a first class resource, which pools contributions and ideas from a diverse community to create unique and interesting content. I would be quite happy to accept his rules, if I were entering that arena, as they are not that different to ours in their general premise and intended spirit of goodwill.

I can't say that the entry with reference to copyright would bode well here, as that would prevent the inclusion of may of the news articles included here as a point of discussion.
The use of copyright material with respect to education and personal use is acceptable. This site is primarily aimed at personal education, and the sharing of knowledge within a community of people who share a common goal or interest. It's is also our intention to share that knowledge with our society as a whole, by delivering alternative opinions to those presented by main stream providers.

I can't say that I can see what we can draw from that example, as it's scope is far to narrow compared with the potential here. We also have our Community Guide Lines which cover things in a less formal yet firm manor. The two are intended to compliment each other and express the spirit of which this community has been founded. :)
MyZone Page is your own personal web page which you can create right here on Sanctum Zone. It's dead easy! Why not check out the example https://sanctumzone.co.uk/myzone/Example/.

For the record. I posted the Dick Gaughan thing purely for the comedy value.

I would be up for a disclaimer along those lines. :) Ours should be covered by section 6.0.1 we could make an addition to place the onus on the contributor more, I guess. The community guide lines also express the need for personal responsibility.

I have people coming over shortly so I can't devote too much time here at the moment.

I agree with the asking first and in an ideal world that would be the best approach. What we need to consider is that people will drift in and out of our community, and we may not have the relevant personal information with which we could use to contact them directly. We actually don't attempt to harvest peoples personal details and there are no mandatory requirements in that respect. Which exposes us to abuse by people using and abusing their anonymity. It's up to the community to ensure that those types of abuses are discouraged. It's also difficult under those conditions to establish the real copyright holder as I'm sure you would appreciate.

I guess that could be open to abuse under those circumstances. No rights are removed from the original copyright holder by the way. I think you will need to expand on that notion. If you have alternative wording which allows the content to be hosted here and protect the community from the dangers of copyright wrangles, while also allowing the content to be used in relation to the community and it's activities it can be considered by everyone.
What I'm getting at, is if someone has written something themselves or even done a picture, it would seem that under these rules, if they link/upload it here they are giving the site permission to do what it likes with it. Effectively granting a free and unlimited license.

If that's the case then I would personally have issue with that.
