If I may speak on topic:

I knew a couple who split up over addiction and they both started going to NA which as far as I know covers the same principles. One of them quit the programme and despite the fact that he had always been a "christian" he was probably never really down with it and he left his marriage and addiction behind and has become rather new agey. As far as I know he quit drugs and got into working out etc. He quit in his own way I guess. Perhaps though working out and dating numerous women were his new addictions.

On the other hand is wife, now ex wife, did the programme and quit drugs. The problem is that her new addiction was "the twelve steps". So they are both still addicted to things I think but the things they are addicted to now are just less destructive. One is slightly more annoying than the other.

There are alternatives to AA and NA but where I am Churches are like Pubs were in England. Religion is already a big deal here. Living and working here I encounter a fair number of reformed addicts who are born again or whatever you want to call it and their new addiction really is Jesus and salvation and they annoy the hell out of me. Maybe that is the point.

I should stress that Christians don`t annoy me as such, but some people can not seem to hold a conversation without bringing it up. I worked with a Jehovah`s Witness once and we would have some pretty good discussions but I always felt that he was trying to convert me and we could talk about anything and he would take it back to the same topic. My uncle was big in the C of E as it goes. He used to go to summits and things. I forget what title he held but it was one you only hold for a year. His Christianity is not the kind you find that often in the south though sadly.

However, I do have huge problems with people who can't or won't accept that others may have found their own 'truth'.

Fundamentalists of any stripe, imposing unwavering compliance upon people can kiss my curvy though and that includes atheists.
Get on with your choice and let others get on with theirs. Unless you are about inflicting physical or mental harm I'll defend your right to do it and I would expect no less in return.


On the AA/NA front. Let's face it no-one is going to even go to an AA/NA meeting voluntarily until they have made the first step of accepting they have a problem they can't handle alone. Their progress will always depend upon their resolve to get a handle on that. External support is a bonus but worthless, absent internal determination.

There is a drug counselling place in the big town near me that is good. Alot of the counselors were themselves ex addicts which I suppose adds a bit of understanding often lost with others. Also they treat you with acupuncture and herbal teas
They were a charity but were having a much better success rate than the standard NHS Drug n Alcohol services, which are of course massively underfunded and stigmatized.
