I'm interested to know (because I'm a nosy bastard) does anyone else here not have a mobile?

I gave mine up about a year ago, because tbh, I was struggling to afford food, so it seemed like a bit of a luxury. I also never liked the fact that to have a mobile, seems to imply to many that you should be available to them 24/7. I never really understood how I'd managed to get all the way through to my early twenties without having one, until I gave it up.

I can honestly say, I am much happier for it. In fact, the only time I actually have wished that I still had one was when I was staring bemusedly at some criss-cross chemtrails recently, and even then, I only wanted it for the camera capabilities.

If people require my attention these days, they either have to call me at home or come and visit me. If I'm not home, than I cannot be contacted. Sometimes, even if I am home, I won't answer the phone to you. Imagine that?! As yet, there has been absolutely nothing so urgent that requires me to be contactable wherever I am.

It is quite a liberating experience. Anyone else or am I utterly alone in this?

It's just another means of keeping in contact with friends and that. It's handy, especially if they don't live locally.

I need one so that my son's school can send me multiple pointless text messages per week regarding nothing of interest, and so that my daughter can call me at any time to request my chaffering services between home and her mates houses.

I do like to have it in case of emergencies, and my mum's called me on it in rare moments of distress when caught up in bizarre circumstances, so I daren't ditch it.

I'm not very popular anyway - I don't get plagued with calls by anyone other than family members.

*raises hand* tossed my mobile phone a while ago (like 2010-2011). Got stuck with someone elses for a while, while on a trip, then had to have a temporary one earlier this year because I was on call for a friend due to give birth (but I tossed that one too as soon as the baby came out, literally almost the second the baby came out it went off and the battery was yanked from it).

I didn't like people being able to track me down no matter where I was or what I was doing...I can see the benefit of having one in an emergency, but other than that, I would just rather not be able to be found...and even in that circumstance, sometimes, I'd rather be deserted for a month before anyone being able to find me just to get a break from everything and everyone.
I came into this world kicking and screaming while covered in someone elses blood
and I have no problem with going out the same way

I do get what you mean though Ab.
I'd kind of like to live in a Shire like place, and have surprise visitors like Gandalf and Dwarves knocking at my door...go on surprise adventures and that :chuckle: There's a point in there somewhere :D

You should answer your phone Ab...it could be an old mate who's just won a load of cash and wants to share it with you, etc. :D

In that case, I apologise for calling you mystical. :D

Thanks all. I too can see the benefits of them, but for me personally, the benefits didn't really ever stack up. There was nothing I could do with it that I couldn't do at home, and tbh, I found my relationships and friendships were a little too dependent on this technology and things like FB to actually really mean anything.

For example, since ditching it and not having anything to do with FB, I have a couple of people that I actually see on a regular basis, whereas before, I apparently had 100s of 'friends'.

A card on my birthday means so much more to me than a text or FB update, tbh, even if I don't get to see you in person. I know it's the thought that counts and all, but come on.

I'm not judging anyone either. I'm just interested to know if I'm on my own with this. Even my grandfather has a mobile, so it intrigues me. Here is someone who has spent over half their life so far without this technology, yet now, it never leaves his side.

Well...if he was really a mate, I'm sure I'd be seeing him soon enough and then he could actually hand me a great sackful of cash and have the pleasure of seeing my reaction.

;)
