And here is why: religious belief, and indeed faith, exists in the hearts and minds of the believer. To destroy religion you must control people's minds. Which, if you seek to destroy religion because you think it controls people minds, makes you a er....hypocrite.
Secondly, to destroy religion you would have to ban congregations, outlaw the formation of religious orders and communities and illegalise activities such as prayer or spiritual meditation. So much for freedom.
And since many religions have a history of martyrdom, you would have to kill billions of people.

BTW when arseholes like Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris talk about their campaign against religion, they almost always intend or allude to Christianity. Then Islam.
Likewsise when Icke and Ickesters talk about religion negatively, they almost always refer to Catholicism, Islam and Judaism.
Inconsistently enough they do not talk about Buddhism, Sikhism, Hinduism or other world religions in this way and quite happily borrow their ideas and distort them.
In fact "Save Tibet from Atheist Chinese Communists" is "cool" and Wicca is like "awesome" and some Guru or Shaman is just "ace".
Still "all religions are the bad" is a common motif around coffee table "spiritual" folk.

Although I'm not religious myself, I pretty much agree with all of this, although I don't know who Sam Harris is. If he's anything like Dawkins, I'd rather remain ignorant.
