I'm not sure it's that straight forward, tbh.
There are a few 'vagrants' who hang around Preston, and have done for years. One of them was sitting in the bus-station subway one night as I went through, heading to the car-park above, and apart from us, the place was deserted. He asked for money (I had given him some in the past) and I said, 'Sorry, I haven't got any money on me at all', which was true. He glowered at me, and started getting up, and I honestly thought from his demeanour that he was going to lunge at me. Luckily, a lad appeared round the corner at that moment, and he backed off.
He lives next door to a woman I used to work with. She reckoned he was by no means impoverished.
Another time, I lived in Walkden where there were steps down to a park directly opposite the house I shared with some other girls.
As I was walking home once, there was a dirty, tattered looking man lying at the bottom of the steps, whimpering for help. I was just heading down to him, when one of my house mates appeared in front of the house, shouting and gesturing urgently to me to come in. So I ran towards her, and she was telling me to get away from him.
Hey presto, within seconds this weak, injured bloke who was in need of assistance to get off the floor, was now standing at the top of the steps behind me, shouting all kinds of threats and obscenities.
I'm not suggesting for one moment that all homeless people are dangerous scammers - very far from it - and granted, there's not much threat posed when you're in the open with other people around. But incidents like the ones I've described do have an influence, and I tend to be wary now.
Walkden and Boro!? Its amazing you've made it this far Gilly
