Flames, load bangs, it's like a fucking warzone.

I was very lucky to be staying in the hills above Sorrento overlooking the whole of the Bay of Naples for the Millenium. The view was glorious.
Anyway come 'Millenium night' the fireworks started.
We were outside taking in the amazing fireworks displays all around the Bay. I survived about 30 minutes and had to go indoors. There were fireworks and crackers going off like machine guns and whizzing so close to our heads I was actually ducking.....as I went indoors my comment was "no wonder all those poor men in WWI in the trenches got (can't remember what it was called now ) with all that gunfire going on 24/7/365....I can't stand much more of this, I'm going in."
It started at about 10.30pm with the odd bang and whizz...bit like you get over here....but at midnight it was like WWIII had started. It was beautiful to watch all the pretty lights, but the constant noise was so loud you could actually feel it in your chest. It sort of creeped me out.

The one thing I can't quite figure is between the fireworks and the bonfires burning Fawkes' effigy...are we 'celebrating' a failure or a success, or just remembering what could have been and keep wishing every year that some other Fawkes would have another go?

This is completely out of character, but I really like fireworks. Maybe it reminds me of being a kid, I don't know. I can understand why the incessant banging might get on some people's nerves, though.

Freaks our K9 out, although he's not been as bad this year. Last year we had to drug him up.

Just to clarify - I like it when I'm having a bonfire & letting off fire-works. It's just other people doing it that I'm not keen on.
