I do think your judgement is off though. The car of itself, is not a bad thing. In common with nearly everything, the corporate lust for profit in combination with ourselves is the real problem.
We are a savvy enough species to have personal transport that isn't a disaster. Because of the two predominant factors I gave, we instead have people religiously craving and buying new petrochemical cars, getting into debt etc etc.

I disagree. I once owned such a vehicle and although I ended up pushing it more than I drove it, fact remains it was still in existence some 30+ odd years after it's manufacture. Just needed some cash spending on it, which I never had at the time.

ALL cars should last 30+years, many do. I don't see it as a particular endorsement for the Beetle tbh, especially given the shockingly underpowered motor, totally rubbish brakes, suspension etc that those 30 years will have been ruined by...
Stick a Beetle shell on a Golf and you'd have a car. :D

Well...oh, you weren't asking me?

As for the mighty Beetle, I still maintain - when they're working as they should - they beat the arse off anything else. My mate had one in mint condition and it was sublime.

I think it is in fact the automotive version of me. Born of something quite evil, quirky yet adorable, arse about face in most respects yet supremely 'lovable' despite it all.
