I guess that's an effect of the same mechanism that's causing this sequence of storms. A fast, stable Jet Stream. Drawing up warm air from the South as it goes.

The year my daughter was born (in Sunderland) it first snowed the day she was born and we were shovelling snow on & off for 6 months. There are photo's somewhere of myself lying face down in the snow, with my great dane (cart horse size) puppy dragging me along by its lead, when I was foolhardy enough to attempt to take him for a walk. The dog whisperer would have been mortified.
