PS...it's Saturday night, and I'll tell you a story......I was teaching at the local 6th form college, and for whatever reason in that Tuesday class, I told my students that by the time we met the following week something so big was going to hit Japan, that it would affect the rest of us. So Friday 7.30'ish am, my friend phones me telling me what's happened in Fukushima. First thing I did.....fired up the laptop to see what was happening in Yellowstone...it was going berserk. Later that morning my phone kept going off from my students. I don't honestly think Yellowstone is going to be the first to blow, I really don't.

Its sounds like the plot to a mega disaster movie: Bit like the film where the Brit scientists discover their buoys are freesing up before the big chill. In this plot, Angel, you are the Brit high school teacher who spots earthquake armageddon :D

That makes sense - what you said about zipping up or down that fault line.
If the unzipping goes south it shouldnt be to bad because the fault line is offshore and the main threat is from tsunami and evacuation could mitigate damage.
However if the fault line unzips northward it heads inland north of the California Baja and could result into most of the West coast of the US sliding into the sea....And lets not forget Yellowstone.... :O

OK...this one is in Chands vicinity...happened while I've been doing my other posts.....It's not huge and is deeper than has happened off shore....but this is reported in Santiago.....CHAND!!!!!

What is the significance of depth Angel?
Is a low magnitude EQ that is deep more indicative of a potentially destructive event in the future?

You're quite right, the Chileans are very well versed in evacuation procedures, hence over the recent years, even though they have had a few biggys, there is very little loss of life. As opposed to the Japanese who are also well versed, the Chileans do have some escape routes.

As to the California problem...it's a bit like the sciatic nerve of the body...it splits up the bay area etc.....and yes, the tremors have been increasing in both frequency and mag over the past couple of months.
Chill over Yellowstone though....chill... ;)

Good question :D

OK....The deeper a quake, the less damage on the surface, obviously. HOWEVER, and you are quite right to question it.....in my view at this particular depth I would be worried that the fault is fracturing and working up towards the surface...the next one, and there will be, will help me determine better what is going on. Basically, if there is a shallower one in the same area..it obviously will be felt more and there will be more damage.....but like a zit...it's working its way up to the surface.

I see the logic in that - Thanks Angel.
Makes sense that a 3.5 magnitude at a depth of 85km could potentially translate to many higher magnitude quakes at a higher depth in the future.

...."whole lotta shakin goin on..." :D

OK...heads up...Chile has just been hit by a series of upper end 5's, possibly low 6's by the time they have adjusted readings....still going on....I'll keep you posted...but something is rock 'n' rolling down there in the last hour.....stay safe Chand.
