I read the situation like this.
The miner's Union has for good reason been allied with the ANC. Strong bonds exist, born of the Apartheid years.
Since the ANC came to power those bonds have meant that the Union has worked more for the ANC and subsequently the mining companies than the miners. Zuma and co are corrupt capitalist cronyist tossbags that most likely make Mandela weep.

The situation where the miners have not had proper representation by their Union led to the creation of a new Union designed to actually get the miners a fair wage. There are obviously massive tensions between those two Unions and being SA that means strikers are likely to be tooled up.

As the strike went on and the capitalists applied pressure for it to be broken, the Police tried to disperse strikers that are armed, a couple got killed and that then led to this slaughter.

Despite the Police Commissioner's comments which fully back the level of force used, I don't hold the Police ultimately responsible. Equally, I don't hold those miners who are tooled up as ultimately responsible.

The real responsibility for this goes to the crony capitalists who have continued to tun SA on the coroporofascist model, the original Union which sided with them rather than be what a Union should be and the tossers that brought/bring this model to the World.

One word:

Lonmin urges miners back to work after Marikana deaths
On Thursday, Lonmin had said that the strike meant it would lose 15,000 ounces of platinum production, and as a result it was unlikely to meet its production forecasts for the full year.

The extent of the losses would "depend on the timing and speed with which normal operations can safely resume", the company said.

"If the industry continues to be damaged by illegal actions it is not just the economy which suffers, but all our employees, their families and dependents. We need our employees to come back to work and we need to get mining again"

44 dead people, scores more wounded.........get back to work we're losing money........*******

Lonmin (formerly Lonrho plc prior to 1999) is the third largest platinum producer in the world and is listed in London.

Run by these guys

  • Roger Phillimore -Chairman
  • Ian Farmer - CEO
  • Alan Ferguson - CFO
  • Jonathan Leslie
  • Peter Godsoe
  • David Munro
  • Jim Sutcliffe
  • Karen de Segundo
  • Michael Hartnall

  • That chairman J. Roger B. Phillimore also works in the diamond and gold minig industry. Specifically Anglo American.during which...
In November 2007, the European campaign makeITfair published a report about the effects of Anglo Platinum's operations on the adjacent communities in South Africa. The summary of the report states: "makeITfair has learned that 7,000 people in one mining region of South Africa alone have been forced to leave their homes to make way for just one platinum mine operated by Anglo Platinum. Ten thousand more people are in imminent danger of relocation. Families from the first village are now living in appalling conditions without adequate access to water and electricity supply. And communities that have relied on farming for generations no longer have any farm land, so are unable to earn a living

Everything that I've ever heard about South Africa makes it sound like a truly awful place, this is just yet another reason to suppose that.

Oh, very important nation in the future as well, as they've formed a strong allegiance with China and Russia, I would assume due to their mineral wealth:

According to Ms Dub, SA is an outstanding place WUB. Just one that's a long long way from being equitable, is riddled with racism, you know human stuff.

Every time I hear South African cricketers being interviewed, they all live in gated estates and emphasise how much security there is. I've met numerous white South Africans who have an interesting view of race relations. I did meet an incredibly sexy woman from South Africa once. But she was married. And she said East London where she used to live was a shithole.

But Table Mountain looks alright and the weather's good. It's not my cup of tea, though. I couldn't go somewhere where I know racist attitudes are still commonplace and where there's such a huge social and wealth divide.
