Activision Blizzard recently blocked Iranian gamers from playing World of Warcraft as part of an effort to comply with U.S.-imposed economic sanctions on Iran and other countries.

Cos that's how you get regime change in Iran, liberate the Persian people, prevent proliferation of nuclear weapons, safeguard Israel and fight terrorism.

You stop nerds playing their 25th level Palladin.

Brilliant.

Oh and you know that DVD boxed set and expansions and that expensive online account?

No refund
Pretty straightforward, but the company also notified users that the new policy "prevents us from providing any refunds, credits, transfers, or other service options to accounts in these countries."

Winning hearts and minds the world over  :heart1: :splat:

This is crazy, but doesn't surprise me that much. The US federal government chased Bobby Fischer around the globe for over a decade for playing a chess match in Yugoslavia while the US was imposing sanctions on the country (whether this was the real reason is debatable). There is more on this here:

There's a whole lot of strange things involving this game and the US government. There were articles written on the government expressing concerns of potential 'terrorism' emanating from it's player base. One of the claims expressed concern over the in-game chat system, claiming it could be utilized as a means of sending coded messages. Another expressed concern over players developing strategic planning abilities which might place the continuity of the US government in jeopardy. There have also been sociological studies, and even studies done on the in-game economic system.

The government begins plans to monitor World of Warcraft

If I had to make a guess, I'd say this was all done to lead the way to sanctions like this. It just goes to show how batshit crazy some people can be in positions of power.

You're probably not that far off the mark indy, scarey as the thought is.

Would I be right in saying WOW is the largest online interactive game?

I don't know if it is now, but I know they once had a little over 12-13 million players world-wide. I think they're down to about 8-9 million. That's still fairly sizable.

Indeed. I'm sure they'll be able to find, categorize and label a substantial amount from that starting point

Thanks for the responses to this ever-increasingly bizzare story.

Needless to say that the fear-machine is gearing up#
Between 2006 and 2007, the 33-year-old Norwegian mass killer spent his days and nights immersed in a world of fantasy monsters, wizards, and knights performing violent "missions".

During the time, Breivik, who has admitted killing 77 people last July, lived at his mother's Oslo flat, the court heard, supporting himself from his savings.

World of Warcraft – a virtual world where 10.3 million players attempt to achieve the position of "Justicar" – has been criticised for its addictiveness. Prosecutor Svein Holden described the game as "violent".

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europ...ing-game-online.html

Amazing.

So as to possible encouragements to the nutter for killing 77 people:

it isn't the constant "muslims are trrrists", "immigrants are taking over Europe" and "white race under threat of extinction" stories run in papers like the Telegraph, the Fail and their equivilant in Sweden: Expressen.

it isn't the rise of neo nazis across Europe coming out of the woodwork as usual in times of economic recession

it isn't gun porn in magazines and on the internet

It isn't reds-under-the-bed McCarthy madness being encouraged byt NATO/CIA led schemes like Gladio since WW2

It isn't becasue 1% of the population are psycopaths and find reasons to kill no matter what

No, it's the fact that Rangers can now have black bears as animal companions when they reach 9th level. :iitm:

I don't play WOW but I have played pen and pare games most of my life and they got the same treatment but instead of being called trrrists we we were called satanists.
:screwy:
'kin pathetic

Oh yes. Chick tract I know very well.

Not only did they try to say DnD was satanism, but other devil worshippers included Hindus, Muslims, Catholics, Homosexuals, wiccans, atheists and those who believe in evolution.

Needless to say they are fundie xtian nutjobs that support war and belive that God rewards people who are good and makes them rich (prosperity theology), the implication being that poor people are bad people.

Pretty much anti-poor, pro-war, xenophobic and homophobic.

Needless to say there were a fair share of links to it on DIF

But the dnd=occult was much more mainstream. It was this lot too:
Helen Lovejoy

Anyway South Park nailed World of Warcraft
