This is a massive story.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lancashire-19869710
A Lancashire man who posted offensive comments on Facebook about missing five-year-old April Jones has been jailed for 12 weeks.

Matthew Woods, 20, made a number of derogatory posts about April and missing Madeline McCann.

He appeared at Chorley Magistrates' Court where he admitted sending a grossly offensive public electronic communication.

Woods, of Eaves Lane, Chorley, was handed the maximum sentence.

Chairman of the bench, magistrate Bill Hudson, said his comments were so serious and "abhorrent" that he deserved the longest sentence they could pass, less a third to give credit for his early guilty plea.

Woods, who is unemployed, was arrested for his own safety on Saturday night and remanded in custody ahead of his appearance in court.

Chorley magistrates heard members of the public were so upset about his posts they reported them to the police.
This is such an important story because someone has been imprisoned for simply saying stuff that other people didn't like. Not threatening someone, or even threatening a criminal offence, just saying something that other people found distasteful. This is literally the difference between relative freedom and fascism. It's absolutely the definition of freedom of speech. I have no doubt that what he said was "abhorrent", but sometimes people say things that are unpleasant. And what's worse is FIFTY people reported it to the police. Very "good thinkful" of them.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodthink

It's the price of living in a free society to tolerate conduct that we find distasteful if it doesn't directly impact upon others. As Chomsky has said "if we don't believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all". To lock people up for saying things that others found offensive is the end of our society. We already live in a corporate fascist state anyway, but if we don't have basic freedom of speech, then what do we have left?

It's like a Facebook thought crime. It wasn't a smart or nice thing to do, but in light of the Jimmy Saville scandal I feel there are more serious crimes for the police to investigate.

So people should face zero repercussions for being insensitive fuckwits?
As the OP mentioned his imprisonment is a blessing in disguise, mob justice is far tougher than UK Justice system.

I did not see his comments he supposedly made in that report. Makes me wonder if it was just a matter of people taking offense or if he implemented the government in some way related to the disappearance of those girls. If I had been that reporter I would have included at least one of his comments for the public to see, if not all of them, as evidence and a reason for his jail time.
If it was honestly just people taking offense, even if the comments were cruel and unneeded, I'd have to say tough shit grow a thicker skin. People say stuff to offend other people on a daily basis, its not jail worthy. And while I am saddened that two little girls are missing, and there is no reason for people to make comments about that in a disrespectful way, people are just too damn sensitive.

Absolutely no criminal repercussions. They should be told that they're insensitive fuckwits. Facebook, as a commercial site, has every right to delete his post. But no-one should ever face criminal charges for saying stuff that people find distasteful, let alone be sent to prison.

What I'm saying is if you say this stuff in the physical world, and somebody disagrees with you, imagine if perhaps a relative of April's or somebody close to the family heard these jokes directly from the horses mouth, (I haven't heard them but they must be pretty crass) I think it would be a few months in Hospital for Mr Woods rather than a stay at her majesty's leisure.

I am finding it hard to have any sympathy for the guy - or to defend his actions if I am going to be honest - I get the bigger picture and where this all leads to and yes it terrifies me - I guess I am finding it difficult to care about those whos lack of responsibility, empathy and compassion leads them to think and act in the way he did.

No he shouldnt be in prison - yes he has the freedom to say what he likes - but the other side of the coin is that people have the right to express what they feel in response to his expression in the first place - happens that 50 of them used that freedom of expression to report him to the police - not I imagine because they are following some party line on -- but because they didnt know what else to do to express exactly how they felt about it so like many turn to figures of authority to 'sort it out'.

I am sad that people act in the way he has - sad that he now has a prison sentence - sad for the family and friends of the little girl and sad for the family and friends of the person who murdered her.

what a seriously fucked up word we live in.

I'm in agreement with that. He was being totally fuckwitted, but taking legal action against people who say or post offensive things is problematic. Where do you draw the line? I'm worried that this could set a precedent with people starting to rat people out for any old thing that they deem to be 'offensive'. People who post these horrid things are twats, but like you, I think that shit happens and it's far more offensive and upsetting when people say that kind of stuff to you in person.

Also, why didn't they just block him and report him to Facebook?

Edit* Just thought of something else. What about all the sick jokes that do the rounds on people's mobiles after things have appeared in the news - like Jimmy Saville jokes? I don't even know where these come from, but someone must think them up. :conf: Some of those are pretty offensive.

Throwing people in chokey for what they say is a dangerous move. I was unaware there was so much free space in our prisons.

The guy may be a high order twat and his comments offensive but he has the right to express himself how he wants. I suspect he only made his remarks to get noticed and possibly got a kick out of upsetting people.

If we locked up everyone who was being a twat I think we all might end up doing a stretch.

And now this.
A man who posted an offensive Facebook message following the deaths of six British soldiers has been given a community order.

Azhar Ahmed, 20, of Fir Avenue, Ravensthorpe, West Yorkshire, was found guilty in September of sending a grossly offensive communication.

He said he did not think the message, which said "all soldiers should die and go to hell", was offensive.

Ahmed was also fined £300 at Huddersfield Magistrates' Court.

Barry Thew jailed for T-shirt mocking PCs deaths

Thew in the offensive T-shirt Thew was arrested wearing the T-shirt hours after the PCs were killed

A man from Greater Manchester who wore a T-shirt daubed with offensive comments about the killing of two police officers has been jailed.

Barry Thew wore the top in Radcliffe town centre hours after the deaths of PCs Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes.

Thew, 39, had admitted a public order offence and was jailed for four months.

Speaking after the hearing at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester, Insp Bryn Williams said Thew's actions had been "morally reprehensible".

A police spokesman said Thew, of Worsley Street, Radcliffe, had been arrested after being seen wearing the T-shirt "just hours" after the constables died in a gun and grenade attack in Mottram on 18 September.

He said the messages on the white T-shirt had been handwritten.
'Darkest hour'

Mr Williams said: "While officers on the ground were just learning of and trying to come to terms with the devastating news that two colleagues had been killed, Thew thought nothing of going out in public with a shirt daubed with appalling handwritten comments on."

Thew was also sentenced to a further four months for breaching the conditions of an earlier 12-month suspended sentence for the possession of cannabis.
PC Fiona Bone and PC Nicola Hughes The funerals for the PCs saw saw members of the public join police officers to pay tribute to them

The two PCs were killed after being called to a house in Mottram, Tameside, on 18 September.

Their funerals took place in Manchester on 3 and 4 October and saw members of the public join police officers on the city's streets to pay tribute to them.

Mr Williams said that "the overwhelming response from the public, who have inundated us with messages of support and condolence, proves that Thew is the exception and not the rule and our communities were right behind us at our darkest hour".

Dale Cregan, 29, has been charged with the officers' murders.
