The former leader of the Scottish National Party Gordon Wilson has once again criticised the leadership of the SNP for supporting equal marriage.

He is due to tell the party at a fringe event at its conference this week in Perth that plans to legalise same-sex marriage in Scotland are a step towards “state fascism”.

“If you think we are sliding down a road to state fascism and intolerance, you may not be far wrong. Be warned, those MSPs of all parties on a narrow majority who exercise their ‘free’ vote for same-sex marriage.

“They may find that a free vote has as much validity as a ‘free’ lunch. If they ignore public opinion, a P45 may await. Do not scorn the electorate”.

In response, Tom French, of the LGBT campaign group the Equality Network, said: “The opponents of LGBT equality have sunk to a new low by comparing equal marriage supporters to fascists and Nazis.

“The fascist regimes of the 20th century persecuted, tortured and murdered LGBT people. In contrast, the Scottish Government are promoting equality and religious freedom for all.
What we are today comes from our thoughts of yesterday, and our present thoughts build our life of tomorrow: Our life is the creation of our mind.

Not so long ago the same sort of rhetoric was used against equality for women when will the human race begin to accept and embrace that we as a species come in different shapes, colours, sizes, genders and sexualities and that all should be afforded the same respect and opportunities as each other. I cannot see one reason why people should not be able to express their love and commitment to each other and have it given the same validity as is given to 'straight' people.

What an irrational comparison though! Fachism is the opposite of giving people the freedom marry who they want. He's tried to obscure the obviousness of that contradiction by pretending he's speaking up out of loyalty and respect for the majority. What a fachist tw*t!

I may have my history slightly skewed, but coming from a 'bent' perspective, it strikes me that this issue has never really been high on the agenda of most fascist regimes before.

I could be wrong, though. :dunno:

Let me just say one thing: I fully defend his right to put forward his ludicrous, half-witted viewpoint.

I actually can't see any reason why homosexuals would want to get married, considering what the ceremony represents, and all of the dogmatic and prejudiced institutions that been primarily involved with it. Straight people feel some perverse obligation to get married due to social convention whereas I think if two gay people are together and happy they should just stay as they are. It's hardly worth it just for the £300 per annum tax break.

Of course, everyone should have equal rights to do whatever they want, that goes without saying.

I agree whole-heartedly, wub. I just came across it and thought I'd share as seemingly, it didn't get much in the way of mainstream coverage. Surprisingly. The important issue here for me is 'equality' and the freedom to be able to choose.

If I wanted to get married, I'd just give into a certain 'administrators' repeated attempts at seducing me. And no, I don't mean DG. Though he did flirt with me. Quite a lot.
