I would agree with that, the question is whether it's a good or bad part of it!

I don't object to the content of the BBC, even though their news is an absolute joke. I don't pay for it...they can put out whatever nonsense they want for me. I think the licence fee, though, is completely unjustified especially when a 74 year-old of modest means still has to pay it, and will be threatened and even potentially dragged through the courts if they don't. I don't see any justification for that. Especially when the BBC employs many of the top earning public sector employees in the country (including by a considerable distance the top earner), but misses their own employees out of such lists:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11333472

And are completely omitted from public sector pay enquiries:

www.guardian.co.uk/society/2010/jun/17/b...il-public-sector-pay

I just don't see any justification for this.

The NHS is a different matter, and as long as we exist within the existing economic system then the NHS should be preserved as surely taxation ought to go towards something that benefits the public occasionally.

Not done and dusted. So sorry Andyh but

As for WUB's comment about Red Dwarf; it was only taken up by commercial TV because the formula had already been established for decades.

The pioneers of it were the BBC and they rightly (IMHO) did not want to take it further.

One of the bst things about the Beeb has been their policy of finishing a project at the peakof its popularity (not always but often) and this just never happens with American shows (e.g. LOST, Heroes etc). They suffer from marketting. As unfair as the TV Liscence is, it allows afor this and a lot of "bad-for-business but good for quality-legacy" decisions. It also allows for aesthetic/quality decisions to overall marketting ones.

A good example is The Office and the Office USA (stilll limping on).

I am not saying that commercial TV is not capable of quality but I think the BBC is not just part of commercial entertainment but part of our infrastructure.

While Andy and WuB, you both agree with me on many things, we do depart on issues like this and other similar issues like the NHS.

So no, I do not want to see it all go and be left awash in commercial "choice" which is only manufactured consent.

And no amount of "free market" rhetoric has been able to convince me otherwise.

We don't disagree at all.
I'd love to see a world without guns and I'd love to see blackadder start some new episodes but it aint happening.
Criminals will never disarm because the motive for their behaviour remains and criminals are the ones making use of the weapons.

I really hate debating. But I just have to say, if I- a law abiding citizen- wants to own an assault rifle then I should be able to. I'm not going to go shoot up a mall. Criminals will always have access to them. You cannot un-invent them.

You never know what the future holds. We don't know how the military/police force will evolve; when or if "the shit" will hit "the fan" but if it did & some crazed survivalists are roaming around with weapons; it would be nice to have an assault rifle.

Sure, I don't trust the government but I also don't trust the people living in my community. Like the Twilight Zone episodes where it's the neighbors you have to worry about("Monsters on Maple Street" & the one about the family with the only bomb shelter).

Anyway, everyone's entitled to their opinions- I just don't want those opinions fucking with my rights. Besides, there are so many beautiful countries that have strict gun laws...

Oh, also want to agree that most cops aren't too bad- at worst they are on a power trip. I have heard horror stories, though & times they are a changing'...so who knows?

Trying to ban guns would work out about as well as trying to ban alcohol. Oh wait, they did and guess what: bootleggers!!

By all means, let's address the core issues and make the world a gun-free place! But in the meantime, let's keep the battlefield level.

Why should John Q. American have his home broken into and his wife & daughters raped/killed just because some low-life shitbag is a little slow on the old "love & light" uptake and chooses to break the law and own guns to commit crimes while law abiding folks suffer unecessary consequences? Criminally minded people are going to be just THAT for as long as there is a reward in it for them. Yes, guns do make it easier for some people in some situations to kill a higher number of folks at a time than if they were relegated to using just baseball bats or crow-bars. But if somebody has murder in their heart they will kill you with their very own fucking body-weight if it means gettin' it done!!

Guns are NOT the problem. Emotionally challenged, spiritually vacant people ARE.

Heh, guess I went the long way around in saying "I agree with ya!" :turt:

The turtle is a nice touch!:)

I totally agree with you about he spiritually vacant people; really great way to describe them. And banning guns is- even assault rifles- isn't going to do jack shit. I'm sick of gun owners being labeled as nuts. I grew up around guns and my father is a damn fine gunsmith; we(my brother) were taught that guns were not toys & for hunting/self defense.

Did you hear about that shit in NY where they published the names & addresses of gun owners? WTF?

Also, Timothy McVeigh killed over a hundred people & wounded hundreds more without guns. Anyway, didn't mean to ramble. Just frustrated. We've got an entire culture that thrives on the violent & deviant "entertainment"(aka mind control-movie "magic", video games) and everyone wants to focus on the guns. The stories about people defending themselves rarely make headlines- at least not world wide.

I guess, the bottom line is, if you don't want a gun then don't buy one. I will have one regardless.

I view guns as a passing part of our evolution.
Necessary at certain times just as money was, but eventually will be forgotten.
We will never stop using them though from a point of authority as long as authority itself keeps using them too.

You see, we in Britain don't. That's why it's important for the arguments against gun control to be presented properly and even-handedly.

The british have been successfully indoctrinated into thinking it has somehow reduced crime.
Despite murder happening on the streets every day, knives and yes even guns. You can outlaw whatever you like, outlaws will continue to use them.
Candy from a baby as far as they're concerned.

The americans on the other hand have been indoctrinated into believing that they are righteous and the best and that they should have guns simply because its 'manly 'american' etc etc.

The Swiss who have very little gun crime but can handle a gun better than most miltary trained personnel have a completely different view.
They see it as simply a way of ensuring their protection of liberty which they actively participate in.
God help a Swiss politician who tried to ban their guns, you see...in america a politician CAN actually get away with it.
In Switzerland he'd be dead the next day, along with whoever else signed the bill.

This is a tough truth folks but you have to swallow it, if you want freedom then you MUST fight for it.

And bear in mind here, freedom is much much MUCH more than just the right to bear arms.

Well I suppose a tropical island is likely to have even less crime :)
Hardly any people and hardly any need for crime basically.

The Japanese also buck the trend by the way. Despite the crowded population violent crime at least is pretty low given the population.
China is beginning to see an increase.

lol well, its the reasons behind owning a gun thats important imho rather than simply owning one.
Simply having one around because its 'the thing to do' doesn't cut it. If anything it only allows someone who flips to suicide and indeed the stats do prove that out did you know?

The Swiss have taken on guns into their 'culture' as something to be respected and not glorified. American culture at least from tv and video games does indeed glorify gun ownership. Its this thats actually dangerous.
The Swiss have a better mindset for gun ownership, I say 'better' because IMHO I would still rather see no guns at all.
I would rather see people actively disobey govt, walk away from the army etc and refuse guns of their OWN volition.
Then and only then will we be rid of them, everyone MUST come to understand this. We must not look to 'leadership' to solve this issue.

But what I'm saying is most people in America who have been gun owners for a long time DO have guns for the right reasons. Protection and hunting; not just because its the "in" thing. Now, there is a boom in people running out and buying one just to have and that's a result of the media created hysteria. Believe me, I grew up around gun people.

The kind you speak of drive me crazy! My boss is one of them. He's acting like a freak because he's all hopped up on Alex Jones. He's been talking all this shit about stock piling guns- he never expressed an interest in guns before. He thinks he knows something about guns and combat because he plays Halo or Call of Duty for hours on end. He runs his mouth about how when "shit hits the fan"; he's gonna "lead the militia"! Lmao! He'd probably get taken out in the first wave. He's just caught up in the hype. When it settles down, he'll be back to blowing money on the next new Apple product or some other status symbol to impress all his Facebook friends.

The primary reason for owning guns today is not protection or hunting :)
Again the Swiss own guns for neither of those reasons, they rarely go hunting outside of a supermarket and they rarely need them to protect themselves, they own guns because they are willing to use them to defend their liberties. This is indeed written in the US constitution yet I rarely hear an american give that explanation as a reason for owning them.

The key element here is fear and NOT of their government but of their fellow citizens.

I fear my government and my fellow man! Lol!

And I don't know what part of America you are talking about but I'm from the south and the primary reason for gun ownership IS hunting and protection- hunting more than anything. That may not be true for the yuppies, the trendsetters or the thugs but it IS true for most everyone I've known in my life. Hate to be argumentative but I'm nearly 40 and this is from my experience.

I'm sorry but you're not telling me the majority of gun owners no matter what part of the country they are in, go hunting with a gun instead of at the supermarket ;)

The only people who seriously hunt for a living have no need for money or any other aspect of our society. The inuits perhaps, jungle natives etc.

I can agree that you fear both govt and citizens alike but who SHOULD you really fear?

We should at this point in the game acknowledge that most criminals are either in govt or running the corporations. The evidence is really pouring in every day now. Its still 50 years behind the game imho but its getting there.

The Swiss have little to fear in the way of street crime compared to the US but we should be asking why that is the case. After all, they are armed to the teeth so what makes them different?

China is beginning to see an increase.

An island is where most ideas about violence stems, then they got crowded, left and spread the word, Easter Islanders were unlucky because they could'nt easily move. We will see this happening on a greater scale if the future as more people are pushed together, no guns needed, they will help the cleansing that always follows that little bit easier.

People might find this interesting:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_of_guns_per_capita_by_country

A brief glance will see that some fairly low crime rates in countries with fairly high gun ownership: Finland, Sweden, Norway.

And of course some countries without guns like Rwanda and Ethiopia have very high murder rates despite having few guns per capita.

Clearly more uns does not necessarily mean more killing and less guns does not necessarily mean less killling.

But I don't think that anyone would suggest that having a gun to capita iof the US in Rwanda by flodding it with guns is a good idea.

The causes of high homicide rates are of course linked to economic, social and political problems within the country but they are clearly aggravted by easy access to guns.

Iceland and Finland don't have the econmic disparity between rich and poor, and judging from what little I know- don't seem to have a culture of celebrating violence and a media profiteering from fear mongering. So the guns have little to facilitate. And indeed Iceland has a waaping total of zero murders by guns.

docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Aon...kFGVk5VODRyTnc#gid=0

Rwanda is torn by fueds and is plagued by poverty so er...yep they will fuck each other up all the faster.

If we focus on developed nations we see that the US homicide rate (fairly higher than other develpoed nations) and its gun ownership (89 guns to every 100 people) is certyainly not unlinked.

Firearm OECD UN Data3 Washpost

blogs.kqed.org/lowdown/2012/12/14/the-un...cas-love-of-the-gun/

So, guns are not the cause of high murder rates, but given the right conditions, they can be a major contributing factor.

The right conditions basically boil down to the standard of citizenry you have.
Well educated people and also happy people living for a long time in a country with a good democracy (lol) and in peace will tend to have lower overall crime rates across the board.

If the govt want to reduce the troubles then they need to be looking in other areas as your post rightly points out mikey.

The standard of education in Finland is legendary and they also have a strong hunting reasoning for the gun ownership
