Has chip and pin had its day?

Go to a cash machine in Japan or Poland and there's a good chance you'll find a finger-sized scanner next to the keypad.

The pattern of veins inside your finger is said to be more distinctive than your fingerprint, and is being heralded by some experts as a more secure alternative to the chip and pin (Personal Identification Number) card system currently favoured by British banks.

Electronics giant Hitachi already manufactures a PC-compatible finger vein scanner, which is about the size of a computer mouse and contains LED lights and a video camera.

I don't understand in what way it's supposed to be "pushing" biometrics simply by running a minor story on new bank card technology - in which they quote two people less than enthusiastic about the idea.

Did you watch the vid too? It was on the BBC, so I think it's fairly safe to assume there is some sort of 'agenda'...

I maintain that they're an absolutely disgusting organisation that take the worst possible (for the public) position on virtually every issue, yet demand to be funded via a licence fee and try to bully people of modest means into funding them, while claiming that their reason for doing this is that they have to be funded this way because they provide a public service. I could go on. Maybe as they're a 'public service broadcaster' at some point they might explain to people that this is really, really bad for them, and really, really good for the banking sector, and also actually do some meaningful and substantial reportage on the monumental banking fraud that has taken place and continues to take place, and actually contextualise this appropriately for once.

Personal experience also confirms much of what you have touched upon: imagine parliament but with cameras and a constant fear that you might actually develop independent thought....
