All UK households will have their access to online pornography blocked unless they request to keep it, the PM is to announce
Every UK householder connected to the internet will have to request access to online pornography if they want to view it, the Prime Minister is set to announce.
In an emotive speech today, David Cameron will outline the move among a range of other measures designed to crack down on extreme online content.
He will say that by the end of next year internet service providers will introduce "default on" filters that will oblige homeowners to "opt in" to receive sexually graphic material.
The filter will be automatically enabled for new customers setting up broadband accounts or switching providers unless a request is made to disable it.
Mr Cameron will say: "When someone sets up a new broadband account the settings to install family friendly filters will be automatically selected.
"If you just click 'next' or 'enter', then the filters are automatically on.
"And, in a really big step forward, all the ISPs have rewired their technology so that once your filters are installed, they will cover any device connected to your home internet account.
"No more hassle of downloading filters for every device, just one click protection. One click to protect your whole home and keep your children safe.
"Now once those filters are installed, it should not be the case that technically literate children can just flick the filters off at the click of a mouse without anyone knowing.
"So we have agreed with industry that those filters can only be changed by the account holder, who has to be an adult. So an adult has to be engaged in the decisions."
Mr Cameron will warn that access to online pornography is "corroding childhood" as he demands tough action by internet giants to crack down on extreme content.

That filter thing appeared on my laptop a week or so back. I thought my husband had put it on to prevent the boy from looking at dubious things.
I asked him to remove it, because it blocked me from looking at things such as, "Weird photo's". I let him do all the technical stuff & don't know his pass-word, and he was being a jack-ass and wouldn't tell me.

Oh for the days when kids only exposure to porn came from finding rag eared copies of hustler in the bushes or raiding your parents stash to take to school to show your mates.
We can never 100% protect kids from sexual imagery but there are ways in which to limit it without branding any adult who wishes to view porn as a pervert likely to be brainwashed by it into becoming a rapist, sadist or paedophile.
I agree with andy.

The British prime minister's internet filters will be about more than just hardcore pornography, according to information obtained by the Open Rights Group.
The organisation, which campaigns for digital freedoms, has spoken to some of the Internet Service Providers that will be constructing Cameron's content filters. They discovered that a host of other categories of supposedly-objectionable material may be on the block-list.
As well as pornography, users may automatically be opted in to blocks on "violent material", "extremist related content", "anorexia and eating disorder websites" and "suicide related websites", "alcohol" and "smoking". But the list doesn't stop there. It even extends to blocking "web forums" and "esoteric material", whatever that is. "Web blocking circumvention tools" is also included, of course.

The ORG's Jim Killock says: "What's clear here is that David Cameron wants people to sleepwalk into censorship. We know that people stick with defaults: this is part of the idea behind 'nudge theory' and 'choice architecture' that is popular with Cameron."
He adds: "The implication is that filtering is good, or at least harmless, for anyone, whether adult or child. Of course, this is not true; there's not just the question of false positives for web users, but the affect on a network economy of excluding a proportion of a legitimate website's audience."
