Not me - it's not my thing, but that does sound like an extraordinary accomplishment worth celebrating.

Sport in general leaves me cold, dawn, so most of the Olympics is going right over my head, but Mr Quietgirl has just watched Jessica Ennis win the 110m hurdles and says he's in love! He is also - ahem - enjoying the ladies' beach volley ball!

If I were a few years younger I'd probably quite fancy Bradley Wiggins! :D :emb:

Usually I'd lap the olympics up, but not this year.

If my set top digi box hadn't have packed in I'd watch some of it. I'm not that bothered though.

Has the BMXing been on yet? I hope Shanaze Reade doesn't fall off her bike this time :D I'd like to see her win gold :)

Let me tell you where I am .....

I'm not the slightest interested.
It's a contrived event for nationalistic bs.
The work and achievement of individuals is hijacked as a display of supremacy for their country.
The multi corporations have turned it into a publicly subsidised global advertising campaign.
I wonder what athletes raised on Coke, McDonalds, Heineken and Cadbury would compete in. The 15 step chairlift?
The power of the media is rarely this obvious. It convinces people to be fired up about events they normally wouldn't give a damn about.

and for those reasons. I'm out.

The Olympic's is a great thing....

The world needs more sports and less guns....

Nations should just compete in Athletics so they don't need to use firearms.

Obviously athletes don't indulge in Coke, McDonalds, Heineken and Cadbury.

Feather if humans fall for that type of marketing then they need better parents....

Please elaborate.

I 100% agree on the less guns and sport for fun is fine.
Nations should just compete in Athletics so they don't need to use firearms.
Why should nations compete at all? (poetry used to be an event btw). :)
Obviously athletes don't indulge in Coke, McDonalds, Heineken and Cadbury.
For good reasons. So why allow these products to be associated with the pinnacles of fitness?
Feather if humans fall for that type of marketing then they need better parents....
If people didn't fall for that type of marketing the advertisers wouldn't be investing huge amounts in that form of promotion.
Where do folks go to trade in their parents for new ones? ;)

I think sport is a stupid waste of time, I prefer to see people being creative like freerunning or skateboarding, I also think Real American should start a thread about parenting and explain why he talks about parents in every thread?

edit: I wanted to add a bit about skateboarding and freerunning and how they are symbolically an attack on the confines and boundaries of modern society, sport in my view is highly ideological in that it is entirely based around order, rules, regulations, some of them confusing to even the professionals, in skateboarding you grind, flip and carve the architecture of order, you literally and symbolically destroy it's uniform functionality and subject inanimate objects to the human will, ie in jumping down stair cases, grinding handrails etc, there are no rules, people recognize style and aesthetic value in certain aspects of it, a kickflip is never the same twice.

No. The only thing I enjoyed was the Canadian commentator of the hour remarking how the Olympics turn any city they go in into a "veritable police state". He said it was massive overkill, and they won't disclose how much is being spent on security until long after the Olympics leave, and that the taxpayers will ultimately be footing the bill. In the meantime, he said the organizers effectively have a "blank check" and can spend as much as they feel they have to in the name of "keeping the Olympics safe". I did just watch a young Candian boxer beat the Aussie competitor, because this young man is from my birthplace. I don't take any pride in his win in a "nationalist" way, but I am happy for him.

Isn't there a possible "alien invasion" this year? :chuckle: The real terrorists will only allow something to happen if they want it to. Real terrorists meaning MI5/6, CIA, Mossad, CSIS..... etc. You know, "intelligence" operatives.

Some of it I enjoy watching (swimming, gymnastics, would like to watch the equestrian but they haven't showed it here). Other than that, I don't really care about the Olympics, its just another program running imo.

We have the X-Games over here if you need that fix....( They are the Olympics for BMX & Skateboarding ect...)

I was a serious skateboarder as a kid, did half pipes, ramps, bowls, ect...

My Avatar is even my powell-peralta skateboard logo from the late 80's powell-peralta.com/

So trust me I love skateboarding also but the world still needs sports even more.

As for the parenting question I don't need a thread for that it's common sense to me how it affects kids.

I will explain why I keep bringing this up and why I feel it's the most important thing on Earth.

I coach a very competitive high school basketball team that has won a state championship in the last few years.

What coaching alot of kids from the ghetto has taught me is simply that parenting is the key to everything.

Its no coincidence that kids with parents who's dad smoke crack and mom died from aid's usally turn out bad.

I literally see teenage kids kill each other all the time because they have failed parents.

Just last night on the local news the headline was...

^^"Warning 12 year old kid on a green bike who did 5 armed robbery's in the last 48 hours."^^

(Just another kid without good parents)

Sometimes sports is all kids with no parents have so they don't join gangs and use guns.

I have enjoyed watching the Olympics, I just enjoy sport. I am selective about what I watch, though, I can't watch three day eventing or judo, but some of the sports appeal to me. I have watched some stuff I would never usually take an interest in, I watched the US basketball team last night and they were phenomenal. I am aware of the nationalistic propaganda element to it, but I just ignore that and concentrate on the athletes. Also watching all this athleticism has made me realise I need to do more exercise as I've been pretty slack lately.
