British astronomer and broadcaster Sir Patrick Moore has died at his home at the age of 89, a group of his friends and staff say.

I notice that the BBC article has completely neglected to mention Gamesmaster, instead focusing on his less well known and valuable work in astronomy.

I've been watching old Gamesmasters for the past couple of weeks

He had an encyclopedic knowledge of games as well as space
He read from a script for Gamesmaster, but he was brilliant, it was easy to believe he knew everything about games

I liked him, he seemed like an affable person, like you could have a cup of tea and a chat with him. My nan used to live in his neck of the woods years ago, and used to see him around now and again.

Very sad news.

He had a great sense of humour as well.

Poor quality but stick with it.


I remember seeing him being interviewed at his house and he still had her pictures up.

ah see ya patrick. always seemed quite a character. the old days are all dyin off. change is coming i think. not related really but hes like one of those anchors of time. people that seem the same. and they die and its gone, they changed. oh well. it didnt hit me hard or anything, i am less sad about him dying than i am about my childhood memories crumbling. these constants they dissapear. thats why you cant rely on people, they die.

I remember Joanna Lumley once affectionately describing him as being akin to a comfortable old sofa with the stuffing coming out. I liked him.

not enough mad scientists on TV these days, how can kids fall in love with science when it isn't being presented by a crazy looking mad scientist?

That's so very true.

I wanted to be an Astronomer or an Astronaut from the age of about 4'ish until I was nearly 14 whereupon I realized I hated maths badly and couldn't make head nor tails of physics.... The Sky at Night was part of my staple diet for so much of those years. Everything about him was pleasant and warming... lovely character.

I should have watched more Sky At Night...I never really knew when it was on, it seemed to just appear
