Hi, all! I had an incredibly sad dream last night and I thought I'd share it with you, if that's OK...

I dreamt I was in my maternal grandparents' beautiful garden (they're dead, BTW - we were very close and I still miss them). A man then appeared - I could tell he was a really lovely man, full of compassion and kindness. I said "Have we known each other long?", and he replied "Yes, many, many years". I then said how tired I was and that I really needed a rest. He said "I know - you're exhasuted and deserve a rest, and if you want one you can come with me now. But you need to think - John (my OH) will find you when you've gone, and he'll be devastated. Do you want that?". "No", I said, "I don't want that - I'll stay." The man then walked away and I shouted after him "But how do I cope in the meantime?". To which he yelled back, "Keep praying!".

I woke up feeling really emotional. :(

I don't really know what to say to that, Mandy. I'm not sure how to express it.

It might have been more than just a dream. And whether it was or not, it illustrates what a remarkable person you are, in that you'd rather forgo personal gratification than leave your husband behind to feel desolate without you.

You're lucky to have each other.

Thanks, people!

I guess I have been thinking about mortality a bit lately. I have been feeling a bit depressed at times, too. I've got lots of health problems that I've had for years and whilst none of them are actually fatal, they are wearing me down because I can't get rid of them! At times, in the past, I felt so low that I've wondered if my family would be better off without me - but I realise that wouldn't solve anything, and besides which, I don't actually want to die anyway!

I suppose also for the first time in my life I realise what a pity it is I can't have children (I've never been able to have children - I have an auto-immune disorder which trashed my ovaries for some unknown reason just before puberty). So I have wondered "What's the point?". Daft, I know. It's one of the reasons, I think, I've started writing again - that need to create something, to do something concrete.

Sorry to burble on peeps! Hope it's not all TMI (as they say!).

Course not, GQ. That's what we're here for.

I feel your frustration re your health. I've had something for almost six years and all I keep getting told is that it is something I'll have to live with. It's nowhere near fatal or particularly nasty, but it does get you down when it effects when and what you can do etc.

I started to think about never having children a few years ago too. I could always adopt, but I can barely look after myself, let alone kids! I think it may be just an age thing though, as I'm well over it now. Can't stand the little blighters...

@ abs - Thanks, abs! (Gosh, don't you type fast BTW?!) Sorry to hear you've got a health problem too. It's a blardy nuisance having health probs, isn't it? People sympathise (mostly!) but until they've been there they can't actually know how it feels! I've been really lucky with my OH - he has never actually known me completely well but has taken it all in his stride. He has the patience of a saint!

I'm not religious (as you probably know), but I always liked this...and your dream reminded me of it :)
One Night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand; one belonged to him and the other to the Lord.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it. "Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you you'd walk with me all the way, but I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me." The Lord replied, "My precious, precious child, I love you and would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."
