Consensus decision-making is a group decision making process that seeks the consent, not necessarily agreement about the "favorite" choice of all participants. Consensus may be defined professionally as an acceptable resolution, one that can be supported, even if not the "favorite" of each individual. Consensus is defined by Merriam-Webster as, first, general agreement, and second, group solidarity of belief or sentiment. It has its origin in the Latin word cōnsēnsus (agreement), which is from cōnsentiō meaning literally feel together.[1] It is used to describe both the decision and the process of reaching a decision. Consensus decision-making is thus concerned with the process of reaching a consensus decision, and the social and political effects of using this process.

True, and the recent polls showed the efficiency of democratic polls :chuckle:

Okay, argument time :D
We have 212 members on here... how will we get a consensus decision when not even half of them come on? :conf:
If we have to have the consent of every member in an agreement with an outcome, then we will definitely never get it... or are we limiting it to the consensus of those that actively participate on a regular basis, in which case it is not a true consensus, so there :P

No... I'm not clicking on it either and you can't make me! :P

Seriously, I haven't...I'm splitting arguing with you and yanking my hair out over my sons game of "I'm stupid" when it comes to his math... I will though, although I don't see what the point would be, you want consensus, we have 212 members of which only half click on, unless your suggesting we sent up a council of only certain members to reach said consensus the whole C-word is a mute point.

Edit: Click on the link and may I say :nite: *snores*...I'm not reading that :study: and their little graphic-map-thingys look like someone who is blind dropped acid tried to find their way to the market in the most complicated way possible :hmm:

Funnily enough I floated an idea bout an "Inner Sanctum" a bit back. The idea being those interested in the "community running" aspect could/would join, those just wishing to post on a forum wouldn't join. Hmmm, perhaps a bit of a re-jigging of that idea is called for.

That is an idea I can agree to :yup:
How about making a thread laying out the details and ideas you have in mind for a forum council, "inner sanctum" and proposing it to the members, see what the take on it is and see if everyone can agree that it is a good idea. It would 1) be the beginning of a way to decide things and 2) be the beginning of consensus decision making. If need be it can be put to a vote, 15-25 is majority rule and let it run for 3.5 days to a full week and then close out the thread and go with whatever is decided.

I think that would be a wise move, as some people are definitely switched off by the prospect of debating such things.

if it has a genuine open door policy then it could be a good workable idea.

I think Stars's idea about letting voting run for up to a week is a good idea.

I quite like the "inner sanctum" idea, actually. Though, we'd have to call it something different as that sounds a bit dirty.

I suppose it's a bit like people who abstain from voting for governments, of which I am one. I can't really moan when it all goes tits up - though ofc that doesn't stop me.

I do think it reasonable to at least agree to a point that nothing will ever get done here unless we ask those who are interested and show willing. That invitation being extended to every member, if they don't have their say, what else can be done? The offer was there.

Seems entirely sensible and straight-forward to me. If we were all stuck on an island somewhere *phases out imagining some members wearing only sarongs made of very thin, translucent material*, I think we'd probably come up with something similar for important group decisions. It isn't perfect, but it's a start. Plus, this way, we can always vote another method in if it doesn't work.

At least we have a chance here, unlike voting for real.

What is the point of an inner sanctum, sort of like as a rudder to the sanctum ship?

Is this all about the moderation again, I never really thought mods even do anything anyway, what are the essential functions of a mod team on a very quiet forum, i thought these things just run themselves?

Its not about moderation... It's about actually making decisions. Some members don't wanna take part in that, others are willing to sit there and debate and come to agreements on things that should be done.

Most of the decisions put forth in front of the entire forum have ended up going unnoticed or undecided because people get sick of sitting there trying to decide what is best. An IS (or IRS :chuckle: ) would allow a group of people who are actually interested in making the decisions and will put an effort into coming to an agreement on what should be done in a timely manner, those not interested do not have to participate, sidetrack, derail or otherwise set up something to go undecided.

This Gue.

It could of course include discussion of moderation, moderation selection etc. if the need arose.

What are you proposing to make decisions on then? Surely when the time comes to make decisions we will address them as a community, why set up a sort of governing body in anticipation of decisions that may or may not be made at some point in the future?
