"The original and primitive inhabitants of Britain, at some remote period, revived and reformed their national institutes. The origin of the word Druid is under dispute. Max Müller believes that, like the Irish word Drui, it means "the men of the oak trees." He further draws attention to the fact that the forest gods and tree deities of the Greeks were called dryades. Some believe the word to be of Teutonic origin; others ascribe it to the Welsh. A few trace it to the Gaelic druidh, which means "a wise man" or "a sorcerer." In Sanskrit the word dru means "timber."

The Druids were initiates of a secret school that existed in their midst. This school, which closely resembled the Bacchic and Eleusinian Mysteries of Greece or the Egyptian rites of Isis and Osiris, is justly designated the Druidic Mysteries. There has been much speculation concerning the secret wisdom that the Druids claimed to possess. The English name for the area derives from Snowdon, which is the highest mountain in Wales at 3,560 ft (1,085 m). In Welsh, the area is named Eryri. Scientists say they have discovered big genetic differences between the English and Welsh, reinforcing the idea that the "true" Britons were pushed to the fringes by a large-scale Anglo-Saxon invasion.

Researchers at University College London found the genes of a sample of English men were almost identical to those of people in an area of the Netherlands where the Anglo-Saxons are thought to have originated.

But there were clear differences between the genetic make-up of English and Welsh subjects studied...

The researchers concluded that the most likely explanation for this was a large-scale Anglo-Saxon invasion, which wiped out most of the indigenous population in England but did not reach Wales.

The team studied the Y-chromosome, which is usually inherited unchanged from father to son, and looked for certain genetic markers.

Four British men discussed bombing a Territorial Army base in Luton by driving a toy car beneath its gate, a court has heard.

Zahid Iqbal, 31, Mohammed Sharfaraz Ahmed, 25, Syed Farhan Hassain, 21, and Umar Arshad, 24, from Luton, pleaded guilty to terror offences in March...They were also recorded talking about attaching an improvised explosive device to a toy remote-controlled car, driving it through a gap beneath the gate of the TA base, and detonating it beneath a military vehicle...

Prosecutor Max Hill QC told the court the men were subjects of an intelligence-led joint investigation by counter-terrorism police and MI5 into the movement of individuals from the UK to Pakistan "for extremist purposes linked to al-Qaeda".

He said they had carried out physical training exercises in Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons in preparation for travelling to Pakistan - where they expected to join groups linked to al-Qaeda.

"They discussed making an improvised explosive device (IED) following instructions from an Inspire magazine which they planned to adapt," he told the court.

"They also identified a target for such an attack, namely a Territorial Army base in their locality, although they also discussed targeting multiple sites at one time."

Corn Ddu is a mountain immediately to the southwest of Pen y Fan and the second highest peak in South Wales, situated in the Brecon Beacons National Park. Tommy Jones' Obelisk is found on its western flanks, in between the summit and Y Gyrn.

The summit is very similar to that of Pen y Fan: flat and anvil shaped. It is marked by a large cairn. The summit is often crossed on the way to Pen y Fan. It offers good views down into Cwm Llwch and across the Usk valley to Brecon...
