An asteroid as big as an Olympic swimming pool will narrowly miss the Earth this evening, scientists have revealed.

The 150ft-wide space rock, given the catchy name 2012 DA14, will be passing within 17,200 miles of our planet - a distance within the orbits of over 100 weather and telecommunication satellites.

Scientists have reassuringly declared that it has no chance of colliding with the Earth but the close encounter will be the closest ever for an object of that size.

Just thought this interesting re events in Russia today and Jane's thread. :coffee:

Worryingly these experts didn't have any idea that a meteor was to drop onto Russia today

Well, this isn't meant to sound negative, but actually, we will all die, whether we like it or not. What difference does it make if it's a number 10 bus mowing you down, the big C or a meteorite?

The only difference to me is that if it's some murderous goon in jack boots or a psycho with a gun, there's a possibility you can have the satisfaction of taking him out with you. Most other things, you don't even get to go out fighting.

I think when we're liberated from our meat suits we might find out more of what it's all about. Maybe.

But till then, why worry about it?

Asteroid? Pfftt!

Actually, I'll try to take some jack-booted goons & gun toting psychos out just for fun, even if it's the big C or a #10 bus that comes for me. :D

I think 2012DA14 would have done a tad more damage than just flatten London Abs :O

This is just a generalisation, but I think most people expect 'armageddon' to start really quick....like we've just stepped on to a roller coaster ride and can't get off until the ride ends.
I don't see it like that. I see it as trying out all the little 'kiddy rides'. Lots of little but 'eventful happenings'. It's the way Mother Nature works.

BUT, you add to that fairground...... the participants.....some are there to enjoy the rides, big and small, and others are there to steal and plunder and beat the system......think fishing for a prize...........and nobody notices the big picture because they are to busy with what they want out of the fairground. Take a ride on the ferris wheel, round and round you go. But when you get to the top....have a look at the bigger picture.....look at what's really going on down below.
