Self-sufficiency is the state of not requiring any aid, support, or interaction, for survival; it is therefore a type of personal or collective autonomy. The term self-sufficiency is usually applied to varieties of sustainable living in which nothing is consumed outside of what is produced by the self-sufficient individuals. Examples of attempts at self-sufficiency include simple living, homesteading, off-the-grid, survivalism, DIY ethic and the back-to-the-land movement. Practices that enable or aid self-sufficiency include autonomous building, permaculture, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy. The term is also applied to limited forms of self-sufficiency, for example growing one's own food or becoming economically independent of state subsidies. Timberframe is an excellent affordable method of building DONE CORRECTLY. Problem is more often than not, its the skillset of the construction personnel that give timberframe a bad name. And the one thing that causes timberframe degradation is the fitting of insulation, or should i say the poor fitting . In particular roof spaces, more harm is done by blocking ventilation, and interrupting air flow within the roof zone, than by the build method. Of poor design methods allow for cutting back on timber requirements as well within the build. If you have a close centre of stud distance, and a good stud size, as opposed to the bare minimum, you can attain a good result. Certain criteria, such as plywood choice within a bathroom kitchen, as well as additional studwork for kitchen cabinets, rads ect, are often left out by smaller manufacturers in the hopes of keeping costs down. Many proper timberframed buildings in New England, us, have been there for 100,s of years, not to mention in Europe where there are very large buildings in wood standing for centuries.
Mastering the skills for proper timberframed construction, will give a good end result. Of course poor skills will end up with a crap build right enough.
End of rant :P

I'd agree with all of that. If I gave the impression b4 that I felt timber is not the way to build houses, it's not what I meant.
I was referring to the "Barret Homes" style of timber frame that has spread like a virus in the last decade or two. These things aren't even constructed using proper studwork. It's pre fab panels bolted together in as cheap a way as possible. There is literally NO quality involved. Cheap forced timber grown in "sustainable" forests that support next to no wildlife, cobbled together by robots and given a skin of similarly crap brick to give the illusion of it being a "real" house. Invariably they are arranged in such a way that gives more space to cars than it does human relaxation or self help. Awful, just awful.

Now a handbuilt timber framed building like we have employed traditionally is an altogether different kettle of sea life :)

i helped build my friends house alongside some amish guys about 2 years ago. made out of timber ofc.
they have a good eye for measurements, but i dont think they believe in deoderants as much as they do in hats.

Me too.

There are some fantastic timber frame buildings in parts of England and some particularly fine Tudor examples. Doubt the 'Barrett' equivalent will still be there in 25 years though, let alone 250.

Dubs did you know that with all the new legislations on carbon taxes will end up adding an extra 37 grand to a new build, these fuckwits don't realise these new insulation laws etc will actually end up saving money when the winters get colder lol.

What next eh an open window legislation to let more co2 out to warm us back up again.

Change the name to sean and think of the captain hot under his collar.

I can remember on my travells when I slept in a barn or two before getting where I was going and slept tight and warm, tit don't sleep in a hay barn though.

My faviourite buildings are those German wooden built farm houses with the animals below to keep the house above warm, if you have ever slept in a cow shed you would appreciate the therms after a night out and being locked out after getting back too late.

We have a hot bed of fresh horse much below our cold frame for bringing on the seedlings when its frosty outside.

We have all but lost the skills.

Yep if we ever had the opportunity we would have it all, mill and wheel made from our own trees, water bore hole, heat pump bore, big garden and horses and off grid wherever we could, thing is there are people with the sites who could live like kings and have everything their wants desire if they came together with the skills to make it all happen.

They could have all the security they would ever need or dream of, here we are a few of those cogs waiting to mesh one day maybe.
