Self-sufficiency is the state of not requiring any aid, support, or interaction, for survival; it is therefore a type of personal or collective autonomy. The term self-sufficiency is usually applied to varieties of sustainable living in which nothing is consumed outside of what is produced by the self-sufficient individuals. Examples of attempts at self-sufficiency include simple living, homesteading, off-the-grid, survivalism, DIY ethic and the back-to-the-land movement. Practices that enable or aid self-sufficiency include autonomous building, permaculture, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy. The term is also applied to limited forms of self-sufficiency, for example growing one's own food or becoming economically independent of state subsidies. A few mods I would add for the system are.

Wher the hot water returns along the top rail I would use heavy duty pipe lagging cut carefully to encompass the T joints to the heat cannot escape to the atmosphere through convexion.

Use an insulated standard cistern.
Paint the cold water pipe black or use black plastic pipe.

Use silver foil backing inside the bottles to focus the light energy on the underside of the central riser pipes, use blacknplastic for these also.

Use a seperate cold water header tank so there is just hot water in the reciever tank only.

Use a smaller bore pipe for the inward cold supply so the hot waterwants to take the easiest route upwards through the larger thermo direction.

Keep the twopipes apart from each other so no cross convexion is evident.

I'm going to have a go next week.

Did you notice right at the end of the film, the guys on the roof, their faces were fully covered fitting the lights, even here fears not to be seen saving money for yourselves.

Good suggestions. You could end up with super heated water with those amendments!
