Self-sufficiency is the state of not requiring any aid, support, or interaction, for survival; it is therefore a type of personal or collective autonomy. The term self-sufficiency is usually applied to varieties of sustainable living in which nothing is consumed outside of what is produced by the self-sufficient individuals. Examples of attempts at self-sufficiency include simple living, homesteading, off-the-grid, survivalism, DIY ethic and the back-to-the-land movement. Practices that enable or aid self-sufficiency include autonomous building, permaculture, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy. The term is also applied to limited forms of self-sufficiency, for example growing one's own food or becoming economically independent of state subsidies. I've just started to get a little group together in the local village. The initial mission is to get gorilla gardening. To raise and plant fruit and veg all over the village in every available space. So far I've received nothing but support and commitment to help.
I've floated the idea that hopefully we can expand upon this and begin to build a network of people that are willing to offer their time/effort/skills to both individual members of the community and the community as a whole, for free. Not a LETS scheme but a network of people who have the skills and inclination to help eachother, encourage real community and bypass the system of currency.
I'll be updating the progress in this thread. I also hope that those who are already doing such things will contribute to the thread and that others who may be inspired by the idea will chip in as well.
Together, we CAN change the world :)

Great idea Dub!
The meanings that are the most directly practical are the ones that are sacrificed: the flavor, aroma and touch are abolished to the profit of the delusions that permanently lead sight and hearing astray.

Awesome dub,

You can make so many connections doing stuff like that and everyone loves gardens, it's like something is built into us, to be with nature.

I have my on little veggie patch and there is always to much so I just share it with friends, even though they might not have veggies to give back, there is goodwill and it come's back to you somehow, sometime, somewhere.

Happy to see you've taken Max Igan's advice. :D

Just back from the little pre arranged spell in Cornwall. Nice to see some support in this thread already :)
I'll be having a little meeting with those that have already pledged to help now I'm back and will let you all know how we're going to proceed.
Bad luck on what happened when you tried to do it Jane :( I think I'm lucky to live in an area where a lot of people are up for this sort of community project. Maybe have another go in your area :dunno: You may be lucky and find more support this time.

Considering the developments I've been chatting about in the moving on thread, it seems that this little project may not end up involving me. I'm hoping to still get these people to go with it though, being a catalyst for it would be worthy enough.
