Self-sufficiency is the state of not requiring any aid, support, or interaction, for survival; it is therefore a type of personal or collective autonomy. The term self-sufficiency is usually applied to varieties of sustainable living in which nothing is consumed outside of what is produced by the self-sufficient individuals. Examples of attempts at self-sufficiency include simple living, homesteading, off-the-grid, survivalism, DIY ethic and the back-to-the-land movement. Practices that enable or aid self-sufficiency include autonomous building, permaculture, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy. The term is also applied to limited forms of self-sufficiency, for example growing one's own food or becoming economically independent of state subsidies. Look what I saw being advertised during the tennis today:

channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/doomsday-preppers/
Doomsday Preppers explores the lives of otherwise ordinary Americans who are preparing for the end of the world as we know it. Unique in their beliefs, motivations, and strategies, preppers will go to whatever lengths they can to make sure they are prepared for any of life’s uncertainties. And with our expert’s assessment, they will find out their chances of survival if their worst fears become a reality.
Apparently there's already been one series:

The true measure of a man is not his intelligence or how high he rises in this freak establishment. The true measure of a man is this: how quickly he can respond to the needs of others and how much of himself he can give - Philip K. Dick.

I saw this and had already decided to give it a watch.

Interesting that they've been given their own series.

I've never been very good at prepping. It has caused the ruination of many of my pastries.

I think I'll just wing it or maybe kill a prepper and take all their stuff.

I know a doomsday prepper. She spends a bunch of money on astronaut type food and things like that. She got herself a Gloc too as part of her kit to stop anybody taking her food. She wants to get a school bus to bury in the yard as a shelter. I also saw a movie about this guy who had visions of the end of the world and he kept getting deeper in debt to build this shelter. Wish I could recall the name of the movie.

It was called Take Shelter. It was pretty good too in a weird way.

I'm sure they'll be going for the "let's take the piss out of some religious extremists" angle, rather than the "let's look at the direction society is headed and assess whether or not it's healthy" angle.

For a somewhat fairer treatment of the subject, see Louis Theroux's Weird Weekend on survivalists:

I hope I didn't seem flippant: countless of "patriot survivalists" that I encountered did in fact harbour some kind of religious/spiritual angle to it all. White Suprmacists, ultra nationalists, Xtian fundamentalists and New Age/Conspiracy Doomsayers (webbot, Maya, Geogia Stones et.al) all seem to be greatly looking forward to the End Days or "when the SHTF".

You may remember cathar/spellbound and steppewar displaying this. I think a combination of misanthropy and ennui explains a lot for these keyboard doomsayers. Those that spend a lot of money on the shelters and the guns are finding ways of coping for their reclusiveness, social awkwardness and fear. I suppose thinking that you and your family and your friends will some day soon be the only ones safe, there might be some comfort and pride in that. A certain amount of revenge in the imagination either.

There is also I believe a lot of money to be made in this. For those that oppose the military industrial comples, they sure do give them a lot of business.

Louis was on a tongue-in-cheek pisstake with a camera. Then the "limeyville" comment after 20 minutes turned within a few minutes into holocaust denial came in. To the other guy's (Mikey's) credit, he wanted nothing to do with that.

The hippy-hobbiy guy seemd kinda  :oldfart: but he seemed forced to rub shoulders
Adolfsmiley
and non-too-happy about it.

Once you get into the Aryan nations, things move away from the recluses and into the exiled: these didn't seem eccentic or paranoid, they seemd belligerent and hate-filled.

When it got as far as the straw house, I started looking for the Big Bad Wolf.

As for the final credits: Louis and the crew are well within the realms of "fair play" to send up a dancing holocaust denier in a helmet and roller blades :killinme:

Cheers for the documentary. I thougoughly enjoed it.

Man it appears the worst of humanity, selfish survivalism, Homosurvivalist will live on regardless, maybe in 15,000years scientists will theorize if they killed off the last of homo-sapien or whether homosapiens en masse died off naturally, like they do now with the Neanderthals.
The meanings that are the most directly practical are the ones that are sacrificed: the flavor, aroma and touch are abolished to the profit of the delusions that permanently lead sight and hearing astray.

Thanks WUB I'd missed that Louis doc as well.

Be fair, he's brilliant at playing clueless/non-threatening and getting scary fekkers to drop their guard.

I know he's a bit tongue in cheek but he's actually a fantastic investigative journalist who puts his neck on the block a lot.
Would I go visit that neo-nazi commune? I doubt I could bite my lip enough to a) get the story. b) Not get shot.

I watched a Bill burr thing last night, since mikey mikey i think it was mentioned him before, and he did this bit about getting a gun for when the zombies come because otherwise he would just be getting all this stuff for everybody else to take from him since he couldn`t fight.

As for Louis Theoroux I would often be scared for him when he was in those situations. I think the glasses and camera being around have saved him a few times. Michael Moore also did a nazi doc in his early days that was pretty brave. I mean if you are of reasonable intelligence then you can make these nazi`s look stupid and they frown upon that but they also have guns a lot of the time.

I haven't actually watched the Louis Theroux doc for several years, but from what I remember of it, the main family who he stays with I have a lot of time for, and I think the values that they have are quite healthy. Obviously the Aryan Nations stuff is a bit ridiculous.

I think this is very much an American phenomenon because it's certainly very difficult in England to find somewhere truly remote and then barricade yourself off there. I often feel sickened by the mainstream culture with which most people seem completely comfortable, and in many cases enamoured with, but I am still very much a part of it. But I do think we need to look at the way that we're living and ask whether or not it's healthy, whether or not we have healthy values, and ultimately where it's headed and what the outcome is of this behaviour.

Good luck to them if that's how they want to live their lives.

There's even a dating site for them to use, which is kind of sweet.

Indeed they were. :) interestingly when he met Bo Gritz (the first bloke, the Vet) that man spoke badly of Mike and his family. Perhaps because Mike wanted to do with the white nationalist and holocaust denial folks

Obviously the Aryan Nations stuff is a bit ridiculous.
There used to be an interview on Amazon with Theroux, and he'd kept an email correspondence going with this family, and after 9/11 Gritz felt completely vindicated in what he'd done, and was completely scpetical of the official version. I can't find it now, so I don't know if it's on the site any more, but it was quite interesting.

Well, I just tend to feel sorry for these people nowadays. They have an illness, a form of mania, and a weakness, an inability to really seek out the root cause of what they perceive to be problems in the world, so they scapegoat a weaker group of people instead. I think eradicating racism and prejudice is impossible because it's always going to be easier for some people to scapegoat groups rather than look in the mirror and address their own failings, or stand up to the really powerful people.
