Self-sufficiency is the state of not requiring any aid, support, or interaction, for survival; it is therefore a type of personal or collective autonomy. The term self-sufficiency is usually applied to varieties of sustainable living in which nothing is consumed outside of what is produced by the self-sufficient individuals. Examples of attempts at self-sufficiency include simple living, homesteading, off-the-grid, survivalism, DIY ethic and the back-to-the-land movement. Practices that enable or aid self-sufficiency include autonomous building, permaculture, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy. The term is also applied to limited forms of self-sufficiency, for example growing one's own food or becoming economically independent of state subsidies. Not an answer merc. It fails on many levels in regard to sustainability. Short term, a big help. Long term not so good.

Really, well when you actually need to use survival techniques, the clue is in the "survival" bit...Im talking about surviving not building a fucking commune

Quick clarification for you:
Phase 1 urgent immediate survival
Phase 2 Stability of situation
Phase 3 build your commune..but you wont be in a life threatining situation by the time your ready to do that ;)

Plane crash in remote region, if you survive without serious injury, then good luck. Chances of that happening :iitm:

Tbf though, I bet the majority have a weeks worth of food in the cupboard anyway (cue tales of hand to mouth living caused by this and that), I'd be interested in expanding the discussion out from there.
In the longer term for example, water is likely to be a big issue. It will likely be around but not necessarily in a drinkable condition. I've used gravel and moss filters before. They work but only to a certain extent. As in if that water is seriously contaminated with pathogens, they won't clear them. What thoughts do you have on long term water supply, LW?

The gravel and moss type filters do work knob. I posted waaaay back about the experiment my daughters study group had to do at Uni. She followed the advice and construction of a filter system in the SAS book. When the pond water was tested it was 99% clear. The remaining 1% was no more than the harmless bacteria we drink daily out of the tap....with the addition of fluoride/chlorine added to that of course :)

I reckon carbon. My gut says after going through the two processes, there'd be no need to boil. Which ofc is a more efficient use of resources.

Well if none of you have taken the issue of repopulation seriously I can't help but question how seriously you believe in such a scenario.

Hmmm this is where it gets complicated for the people who like to live a life in the bedroom.
Phase 1 requries water
Phase 2 requires water
So phase 3 if you want to build your commune....

Just another thought for you as I can guarentee Im the only one here who has experienced this...when the SHTF where does all the infrastructure go ?
Buildings?
Items in Buildings
Cars?

No, but you're not getting the point. This isn't necessarily about a shtf event anyway. The way we get our drinking water today for example. Do you think that process, that infrastructure, is a sustainable way of doing it? Either post shtf or as a part of a conscious paradigm shift?
Cos I fucking don't :chuckle:

Edit. Btw my drinking water already comes from a bore hole 100 yards away. My surplus body fluids already go through a reed bed and off into the stream ;) Though I actually think composting them would be a better option. For larger families/communities there is also methane to be had :)
