The Internet is set for a major upgrade in the coming week, but if all goes well, users won't even know it's happening.

The switch occurs at 0001 GMT Wednesday, when the Internet system shifts to a new standard that allows for trillions of "IP" numbers or addresses, up from the current four billion.

Known as the World IPv6 launch to geeks, the move will see Web operators and others switch permanently to the new system from the existing standard, IPv4. A test of the system was held last year.

The new standard was needed because the number of IP addresses under the old system has been exhausted.
The full transition will take several years, and old IPv4 devices and networks should continue to function as before.

"Most users shouldn't notice anything," said Leo Vegoda, a "numbers resources" manager for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which manages the Internet address system.

"If ordinary Internet users need to know stuff, then the technology isn't right."
But Vegoda said there may be some "irritations" for users, as those using equipment on the old standard connect to computers and networks on the new standard.
Each piece of hardware -- including home computers, tablets and mobile devices -- has a unique IP address to connect to the Web.
With about seven billion people on the planet, the IPv4 protocol doesn't allow for everyone to have a gadget with its own online address.

I just feel for those poor souls in developing countries that don't have access to iShit gadgets (after they've finished actually making 'em). :facepalm:

Anonymity for the average user is headed for a nose dive once this gets established. There is a very real possibility that the web as we know it is now coming to an end with the advent of IPV6. Every time I see TV or a newspaper, it's all "we must have wifi access absolutely everywhere", or else Barclays or Natwest are pushing their mobile phone payment systems. It doesn't bode well.

That said, I bought £8 worth of shopping with cash today, so I'm single-handedly turning the tide...

Good man. I never use anything else unless it's an absolute, dire emergency. Even bills get paid with cash at the shop or post office, and if the people I'm paying don't like that, I simply tell them to sod off. Seems to be working so far, though they keep trying.

I also like to abuse automated check-outs, but that's more just for fun than anything else.

This is my only worry as the real shops start to disappear. I appreciate it's all part of some master-plan, but it don't half piss me off. :mad:

There won't be any change for 99.9% of people by the way.
IPv6 will only be adopted by ISP's for the time being, routers with NAT'ing and IPv4 will remain for quite a while yet.
The net won't b0rk :)

I have already ranted many times about the fact that my landlord (a council) have gone to great lengths to ensure all residents in my building have access to internet/wifi/digital TV connections this year.

They can't give us a communal front door or individual letter boxes, but we MUST all have wi-fi.

It's a bit fekkin ridiculous. Anyone else in social housing will recognise the aerials, trunk wiring and large green or brown boxes that have sprung up on local authority buildings lately.

I am very proud to say that I currently make use of NONE of it, and plan to continue to do so for the forseeable. Did I mention that they've added a service charge to my rent for maintenance of said aerial, regardless of whether or not you actually use it? I did shoot off a strongly worded but no bastard has even bothered to respond.

My understanding is that people will be charged as normal, but they've spent so much money on making sure most council housing/blocks of flats at least, all now have this capability.

Earlier this year I came home to find them installing 2 inch thick cabling all around the building with lead offs to individual flats. There's a main control box, an aerial, and what I assume to be some wi-fi gubbins at one end of the block.

I have no actual stats, but I'd be interested to find out how well they have done in achieving their targets. Like I say, we don't even have a main front door after it got kicked in, but we're all wi-fid up, so that's great! :up:
