Thought of starting a thread for this report but opted to stick it in a loosely related thread. Brain scanning remote control of robots anyone?

Babylon could have had some sort of translation technology incorporated into it and eventually taken away making people not understand eachothers language - well that just my take on the matter, anyone else? I'm sure once ubiquitous really takes off it could include something like i've just mentioned.

I recall watching a video where a smartphone was used and held up to a sign in a foriegn language and the camera of said smartphone viewed and translated into english, now when you take into consideration HUD displays on glassess that are in development (www.lumus-optical.com/ - based out of Israel i think) the possibilities are endless. Being in a foriegn country not knowing the language at all you could view all matter of things, including signs for directions - shop fronts so you know exactly what is what. I'm sure this would eventually be applied to audio and wearing an ear piece you could have a conversation with someone of an entirely different language and it be translated more or less with some delay.

I recommend you to read my latest thread in the technology section, once the missing jigsaw piece is in place, then you will see what Andy and I have been typing about on here.

I went to Southampton last week and I could not even get into the apple store there, it was heaving on a Wednesday. Not convinced.

What you all doing on here, hang on you are using the internet arent you not. Did it take ages or just came naturally to you.

Ubiquitous computing is here already, you think the internet is a free resource, that is what the elite wanted us to believe.

www.siliconrepublic.com/comms/item/28295...e-and-three-confirm/

Vodafone and Three have entered a deal that will see them form a new 50/50 joint venture whereby they will pool their physical network and site infrastructure at more than 2,000 locations across Ireland.

As Siliconrepublic.com reported recently, the two companies will continue to run the ‘intelligent’ elements of the network separately, including their core network capabilities and service platforms, as well as manage their own radio equipment and spectrum independently.

The new company is expected to be fully operational from the autumn and will be headquartered in Dublin.

The managing director will be appointed from an independent pool of talent and the new company will have its own management board. About 80 employees will transfer from Vodafone Ireland and Three Ireland to the new joint venture company after a consultation period.

These will include employees that currently work in the radio and transmission teams, the Network Operations Centre, and some support roles.

Rapid rollout of next-generation network
The companies said this strategic partnership is the first of its kind in Ireland whereby the joint venture company will manage the rapid rollout of a consolidated portfolio of shared network sites and infrastructure, as well as the maintenance and ongoing operational service and associated equipment.

The deal between Vodafone and Three echoes a recent deal between Vodafone and Telefónica (owner of O2) to build a nationwide 4G network in the UK that will cut the costs of deployment by 25pc.

Continued on the link above.

For those who don't know what 4G is...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G

In March 2008, the International Telecommunications Union-Radio communications sector (ITU-R) specified a set of requirements for 4G standards, named the International Mobile Telecommunications Advanced (IMT-Advanced) specification, setting peak speed requirements for 4G service at 100 megabits per second (Mbit/s) for high mobility communication (such as from trains and cars) and 1 gigabit per second (Gbit/s) for low mobility communication (such as pedestrians and stationary users).

Yeah you read that right, 100mbit mobile and a gigabit stationary.
Add this to ipv6 and you have a recipe for ubiquitous computing.

This was an interesting thread, I'm starting to understand these issues now.

The Daily Telegraph readers are looking forward to it.

Interesting results there and yes I can see Andy that they are determined to go ahead with their next stage. I must admit since using netflix I am not so interested in buying dvds or blu rays, I got my xbox and I can buy games through the microsoft marketplace.

I do like the idea of taking my entertainment on the go with me and I think most people will want it too. Humans are always curious.
