Windows 8 is coming and it means that the operating system we all come to know will not be the same again. Many people like myself have tried alternative operating systems such osx and linux in different flavours, even so they promote similar approach they still think about the most important aspect of computing. Windows Desktops.

Windows 8 will be the beginning of a marriage between microsoft phone, console, tablets, laptops and our beloved desktop machine.

Metro UI will see the end of our desktop environment with icons and the introduction of tiles with apps.

So will you try windows 8?

I'll be trying it out and have already with betas as its part of my job :)

There is indeed a big push to try and move towards touchscreen apps.

You can download an .iso here if anyones interested.
windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/download

Also its best done in a vm.
Virtualbox allows you to run multiple OS for free on your machine, you can get that here-
www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

To be honest both win8 and the latest ubuntu stuff is really aimed at touchscreen devices.
They're actually more annoying to use with a mouse than the older operating systems imho.

Well windows 8 is designed for the tablet market and I think this is a bad move at this time when the economy is gloomy, people will not want to change their computers like smarties, I think M$ should keep both options of touch or old desktop for at least another 2 years.

I know they want to dumb us down in disguise of making it easier, but we on here know different.

Theres not going to be any choice in the matter :)

Desktops will not be made shortly, laptops will even phase out, eventually there will be nothing but mobile devices.

You can take that to the bank btw ;)

No good building myself a gaming rig. What do you think Andy.

I can see how this will be implemented, make it so frustrating for the user and people will decide to buy a slate from microsoft.

Windows 8... :killinme:
Sorry... I apologize...somewhat :D . No, I will never use it, I can barely stand Vista (not to mention I just got the damned thing trained over the past weekend so it doesn't try to fry my computers, or me, every time I turn it on). Why would I want something new that Microsoft made, is probably full of bugs and errors and would have to be rewired to work properly? And it probably has a self destruct mode programmed into it so that if someone did try to rewire it and make it work, it'd blow up or start sending electric volts through the keyboard.
I came into this world kicking and screaming while covered in someone elses blood
and I have no problem with going out the same way

Exactly!
I don't see the point in building a gaming rig anymore because of online streaming games such as onlive.com you've seen it yep?

isn't windows 8 supposed to come in two flavours one which works with arm processors and the other designed to work with the classic desktop/laptop computers. I think this may add to a bit of confusion within the market for windows 8 as people using win 8 on phones and tablets will essentiially be using a cut down verison of windows.

hopefully they can intregrate an operating system that works cross platform ,as playing some older games from the pc on a high end phone or tablet would be fun and being able to use the same programs on your phone and on your pc would be a god send.

but i cannot see this happening and expect the win 8 rt to be more of a cutdown version of windows, plus i am currently using android icecream sandwich on my tablet which seems to work fine as an operating system so win 8 would have to do something really impressive to convert myself

Microsoft have thrown their eggs into the cloud basket, so they want to create their own version of tablet and phone, like AndyH says in time desktops will become obsolete. So in time there will be only one flavour of windows 8 and that is the metro gui on tablets and phones.

I have been debating whether to build a new computer as I do like to play world of warcraft and I just about play EVE. I am not sure where mmos will play in the cloud concept but we will see.

Yes Andy I have tried onlive via BT and it needs a lot of improvements and bandwidth to get me interested, I am thinking of getting an xbox 360 as I still like local play.

I've been playing around with the Windows 8 release preview edition. It runs pretty well on my laptop, dare I say a little better than 7. My loptop has an older core 2 dou with intergrated intel graphics, so I'd love to see how 8 runs on a newer Ivybridge chip. The Ivybridge archetecture has some killer intergrated graphics which actually stands it's own with some of the newer dedicated mobile graphics cards. 8 didn't run very well on my friend's gaming desktop, likely because it wasn't currently designed to handle high-end processors (an over clocked Sandybridge quadecore) and graphics cards (two nVida 680's - EVGA brand- in SLI configuration). That will likely change upon release. I don't care for the metro interface, but I can see where they're going with it. They ditched the aero interface that was focused upon heavily in Vista and 7, which in my opinion is a good idea. It has some visual appeal, but draws unnecessary resources for lower-end machines. Give it a try if you're curious. I've been playing around with it via virtual machine with Oracle's VM virtual box (Free desktop viritualization for those unfamiliar with it).

Local servers is all its gonna take :)

Also someone mentioned darth mentioned cross platform stuff, all of this can be done cloud you see.
All devices will be connecting to the same cloud servers.

Even the xbox is going to be phased out and m$ leaked those plans too...

I can see the next generation of consoles from M$ will be a total cloud experience with their version of onlive, or maybe even they will buy out onlive or its competitor. Then with the current entertainment content such as netflix etc will make a perfect setup.

I decided to go for a xbox as it is a lot cheaper

I also think windows 8 will be on the console as well.

The latest xbox leaked plans show an upgraded model for next release but then something radically different...more akin to a small smart tv adapter box like AppleTV that will cost next to nowt, the controllers will prolly cost more.
This will turn your tv into a browser and netflix etc and will play cloud games via subscription.

This is about 2 years off approx

I think windows days are numbered instead we will have microsoft metro. They want to stamp out piracy in the guise of smart technology for the sheeple.

Stamp out piracy and remove the middle man entirely, no more games shops, no more cd's no more dvd's, no more video rentals even, just all cloud. Maximum profits and efficiency and automation and more sacked people.

I think they are trying to dumb down information tech to make it more passive like watching tv for example, keep it active i say or we go to a place where we are dictated too what we can and can not do.

Well let me tell you this my processor does not support windows 8 preview edition, I tried to install it on my p4 machine and it will not have it.

Error 5d code because my motherboard or processor does not support nx

I thought win 8 should work on all hardware regardless, umm well I am not going to buy a new pc just for that.
