If the components of a battery, including electrodes, separator, electrolyte and the current collectors can be designed as paints and applied sequentially to build a complete battery, on any arbitrary surface, it would have significant impact on the design, implementation and integration of energy storage devices. Here, we establish a paradigm change in battery assembly by fabricating rechargeable Li-ion batteries solely by multi-step spray painting of its components on a variety of materials such as metals, glass, glazed ceramics and flexible polymer substrates. We also demonstrate the possibility of interconnected modular spray painted battery units to be coupled to energy conversion devices such as solar cells, with possibilities of building standalone energy capture-storage hybrid devices in different configurations.

This seems very promising. I'd like to see what other applications could be applied to this tech. The biggest appeal for me is it's implementation with solar grid arrays. Hypothetically these could be painted into the body of vehicles and charged with embedded solar panels. Utilizing the vehicles kinetic energy could also be used to charge the paintable batteries via regenerative braking. It could in theory significantly reduce the weight added by traditional Li-on battery configurations currently used in electric vehicles. That would make them more energy efficient, as it would take less energy to accelerate. Again, that's hypothetical. The technology is quite far from having the efficiency output required to power a vehicle.

Check out the article in full in the link above for additional information and model design/implementation.

You'll have a hard time convincing anyone in the UK of the benefits of solar power

wind and waves we have in abundance, but sun....... :dunno: :larf:

looks interesting though, you are right, it could revolutionize electric cars.
most of them have these heavy arrays of batteries at the moment, with this technology the bodywork itself could be a battery.

and KERS (kinetic energy recovery system) is definitely going to be utilized more in cars, it's been in F1 for a few years now, and I think I'm right that it's in the latest Merc S class

Hahaha, you have a point Mart. Light does still penetration cloud cover, but not enough in some regions to be a reliable source of energy. I’m also keen on seeing where graphene could take the concept of organic photovoltaic cells (solar panels). Graphene has an atomic level honeycomb structure. It’s incredibly thin, very flexible, and is pretty good at absorbing and transmitting energy from several sources (Thermal, electric, kinetic, light, chemical, etc). If it were combined with these paintable batteries, amazing energy efficient devices and vehicles could be produced. Theoretically of course.

You're right about KERS being used in F1. I do think you're right about it being utilized in the S class. I know it's used in the Tesla Roadster electric, and Ford's focus electric. Eventually it'll be standard. It would be a stupid not to make it given the obvious benefits.

Mr I...I have a battery related question for you. You seem like you have the smarts to know exactly why this hasn't yet happened, as it seems so blindingly obvious to me that it would be really cool and work.

I have a kinetic watch. It never needs batteries and is charged by movement. It has a mechanism inside which winds around when you move, hence charging itself over and over. It kinda looks like a wheel.

Why, if four of these were fitted to a car (as in designed to be a part of the wheels and similar in size), could a car not be capable of powering itself? It could be plugged in for top ups, but otherwise, every trip you made would charge the 'battery'.

Of course, I know why it hasn't been done yet, but do you reckon it'd be possible?

EDIT: I have copyrighted this idea by the way, so none of you best be thinking of stealing it. :hmm:

Cars don't pleasure themselves frequently enough to generate the necessary kinetics?

roflmfao!!

FYI Abo its not been done because the energy is miniscule from the method you mention.
Its basically just a weight attached to a ratcheted gear that winds up the watch and the ratchet spins freely when it is fully wound up.

:agri: This, and the use of piezoelectric quartz crystals. The gears create a pressure on the quartz which generates an electric current. It's used to maintain it's timing without the need for a battery. I have seen something similar done with what you're describing Ab, though it wasn't very successful with regular day to day vehicles. It was more functional with off road vehicles, though they weren't powered by it 100%. It was similar to the regenerative braking systems, though more bulky. That was early trials, so I don't know where tech has gone to. I haven't kept up with it.
