Emily: But I do think, in this case, before Facebook if you had hooked up with these jerks, how would you possibly start tracking down their girlfriends? You’d have to call people and really do some embarrassing detective work. So, here it is. They used their real names. I say, ladies, female solidarity. Let these other women know who they’re really involved with.

Farhad: I think we've mentioned it before that if you are going out with someone and they don't have a Facebook profile, you should be suspicious.

Emily: Wait a minute. You may have mentioned that.

Farhad: I think I’ve recommended that. You know why, though? Imagine if this guy didn't have a Facebook profile. That’s why. You should be suspicious of someone who is not making your relationship known publicly on a site like Facebook. I’m going to go on record with that.

Emily: I'm fine with people not having a Facebook page if they don't want one. However, I think you’re right. If you’re of a certain age and you meet someone who you are about to go to bed with, and that person doesn't have a Facebook page, you may be getting a false name. It could be some kind of red flag. This also comes back to don't sleep with the guy you met at the concert.

Farhad: Or at least check their Facebook page before you do.

Emily: Or at least use a condom.

Farhad: Yes, that too.

Emily: Okay, Farhad. Here's my bottom line. No sleeping with people you don't know. If you do, and you find out they have a girlfriend, let her know on Facebook.

Farhad: I agree with you. You should let her know on Facebook. I also recommend you should check out people's Facebook profiles before you sleep with them.

Oh my fucking god

So now we can't meet people and go on dates unless we can can track each others every move?

What happened to trust?

Talk about Big Brother, Surveilance society.

I'm now convinced, I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, I tried to be optimistic...the masses are twats and beyond redemption :D

That article was possibly written by a man in a suit, with grey nasal hair :hahano:

It's that nice, pleasant culture of suspicion we seem to be falling for.
Be mindful, be aware, use your judgement and common sense, etc. when first meeting people, but ffs to be suspicious of them (because they're not on facebook, and that's probably just the start)...that's hardly a great start to any relationship.

Don't forget, when first meeting a man or woman...be vigilant, look for signs of unorthodoxy...if they have nothing to hide they have nothing to fear...

The masses aren't dragging me down that road, the utter bastards! :D
Aren't they busy little beavers? Building their own prison, and I might end up an inmate by proxy...twats :hahano:

You could conceivably make an argument in favour of this. You could argue that some healthy suspicion while building trust is not a bad thing. However, what this guy is seriously advocating is that if you meet someone who's absolutely perfect for you, who you're really attracted to, who you get on great with, who you're absolutely crazy about, you should snoop around - behind their back! - on Facebook, and if they haven't got a Facebook page at all, you should chuck them! How could anyone possibly, conceivably believe this is good advice?

If he'd said "you shouldn't be on Facebook under any fucking circumstances, but if you must be on it, there shouldn't be any personal information about yourself on there that would make you identifiable to others", now that would be a good piece of advice.

I suppose the obvious answer to this is that there is a very vicious and sophisticated corporate culture that targets people from a young age, when they're impressionable. However, I'm not sure how old the guy who made that remark is, old enough to know better, really. But there are many people in the Western world to whom it's incomprehensible that you wouldn't be on Facebook or carry an iPhone around with you everywhere you go.

Indeed it is. I attended a job interview recently and the look of disdain that spread across the faces of the interviewers when I confirmed I had neither a mobile or FB type page was quite something. You'd have thought I'd just dropped my pants and shoved my groin in their faces. Or something.

Regarding the op, and your mention of 'corporate' mentality, I understand it is quite normal for employers to check out potential employees on sites such as FB. Which again, for me at least, begs the question - WHY PUT YOUR LIFE ON THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE? We really have been sold a bastard with that one. Hook, line and sinker.

Alas, I fear those of us that don't are a dying breed. :( (Unless you happen to live in a 'developing' country, but I'm quite sure they're working on that as I type).

My 69 year old mother says publicly that I am abnormal because I don't have a facebook profile. She says this even when I'm present.... I'd say its abnormal for grandma frim 20th century to use egobook.

goddammit the world is fucked.

Once not having a Fecalbook account worked in my favour when I went for an interview. The guy said he had looked me up on Fecalbook and couldn't find me, and he proceeded to ask why I wasn't on there. My reply was that I didn’t want people like potential employers checking up on me and I valued my privacy. He said that was an excellent answer and he liked my thinking. :chuckle:

I got the job.

I do have an account now, just for keeping in touch with friends and relatives.

My niece invited her Grandad (my dad) onto her facebook page

Now he goes on there to find out what she's up to...getting very annoyed in the process.

Next time someone asks me that, I shall say it's because I'm an international terriorist and that I occassionally like to wear other people's skin, which is nobodies business but mine, dammit.

Leaving aside the issue of why you would want to put personal information on Facebook and make it accessible to anyone...WTF would you look someone up on Facebook if you were an employer? Right, I'm looking for some reliable information on this person. I know, I'll look on Facebook...

It often occurred to me as well that someone could make up a fake Facebook page for you quite easily. This is exactly what happens in the South Park episode about Facebook. After all, Basil Brush has got a Facebook page:

www.facebook.com/pages/Basil-Brush/128324683873135

Although he is a great wit and raconteur, I doubt he set it up himself.

It does strike me as perculiar, but then I suppose it really isn't if you take the view the all FB actually is is some nefarious data mining exercise. From that viewpoint, it actually becomes quite a useful resource for getting to know all that stuff about someone that they'd probably never tell you in an interview.

Your subversive 'anarchist' leanings, for example.

Another interesting aspect of 'social networking' sites became apparent to me several years ago when I did have an account on FB and was in gainful employment ( :O ). A colleague warned me that my utterings and apparent disdain for my employer on said account was not a good idea, as someone could report that stuff to HR and I could get into trouble. Like many others, it had never occurred to me that my employer would be interested in such things, but if you extend the 'gossip' network outside of the office and have something in black and white, as has become an issue for many recently, it becomes an entirely different matter.

I've experience of work tribunals containing FB manuscripts ffs. Madness.

Here's a nice flowchart for the human resources dept.

Does the applicant have a facebook page? YES= Reject application, NO= Check to see if he has a twitter account then!
