Tomyblip

It's hard to believe that a game like Tomy Blip could captivate a generation, but it was high on many Christmas lists in 1977. The game was a simple electromechanical version of Atari Pong: an LED bounced back and forth across the court, powered by a windup timer. The only reason the unit required 2 x AA batteries was to light the little LED ball on the play field. And -- although I never realized it as a kid -- there is something incredibly ironic about a unit marketed as "The Digital Game" which makes a mechanical "bZzzz... Bzzz... bzzz..." noise as you play.

Noisy and pointless but cutting edge at the time.

I used to have one of these, this pre-dates the Atari VCS:



They claimed that this had basketball, tennis, football and other games. They were all rather similar to pong, really.

Depending on the condition and what you got with it, they can make anything between £30 and a £100+ on ebay so hang onto it for another ten years or so and it should do you alright ;)

My brother sold an Atari VCS for about £50-60 years ago now.

I can't believe people will buy an actual Spectrum when you can get PC emulators with thousands of Spectrum games on, that load up instantly and always work!

It's all to do with nostalga and reliving part of your youth. People have strong emotional attachments to things and toys, games etc are a way of keeping part of that alive so to speak. They like them to be exactly as they were too :)

I can understand that, but personally I have no emotional attachment to spending hours titting about with the volume control on a tape recorder in a vain attempt to get Barry McGugian's Boxing to load. We didn't dare turn it off for days if it actually loaded! I loved the Spectrum and it was a great machine, but I think the frustrations associated with it would be a bit intolerable today. I've got an Amiga and Spectrum emulator on my laptop, though, that seems like a practical compromise!
