Unfortunately i succumbed to the power of modern technology and bought an android mobile phone.

I don't use it that often and thought i would take advantage of the free apps available at Google play.

when you actually read what many designers of these apps are asking permission for it's very shocking.
Here's an example of just one app.

Asks for permission to take photos and video at anytime from your phone without you knowing when this is happening, finds your location with GPS,reads your contacts list and how often you have called or emailed them.It also says and malicious apps may share contact data without your knowledge and much more :O

This is just one example-click on the permission tab to view the details.

play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co...lcGxheS5hbmRyb2lkIl0.

I use a piece of junk I bought for about £10 in Argos and does fuck all. It's a telephone. As long as it makes telephone calls and sends text messages I don't care about it doing anything else. I use my PC for the internet and stuff.

Reading stuff like this makes me kinda glad I have this retro attitude to technology.

It's good for calling in air support and screaming 'man down! man down!' :)

This. Couldn't agree more. Mines a bucket and does basics and nowt more. Can't say the same for the rest of my family though, they are all well and truley hooked on phones despite anything I may have said to them along the way.

I remember speaking to a girl once, at Arbour Low, about the evil of mobies. She went on and on about how they pump negative energy into the earth-grids, and keep the vibration levels of Ghia in a lower state. She was really passionate about this stuff.

Then her mobile rang!!!!

Probably just the fracking company letting her know how her job interview went.

Same here.

I never have to buy a handset because I end up with the cast-off ones from the rest of the family when they 'upgrade' every few months. Just put in my pay-as-you-go sim, jobs a good un.

The cast-off handsets are too complicated for my liking these days, never mind the latest devices.

My latest cast-off handset is this nokia thing, in the older blackberry style. Not a bad phone, except its got a full querty keyboard squeezed onto it.

How small do they think my fingers are ffs.

Well this thread is certainly making me feel like I'm not alone with my olde worlde technology of yesteryear - it seems I'm continually surrounded by people waving pictures of their cute baby/kitten/puppy at me as they scroll through albums on the flat tablet that is their umbilical cord to their entire life.

No offence to anyone who uses all these apps - I mean, I get preoccupied with some seriously trivial bullshit myself, but y'know how many people really need some comprehensive breakdown of statistics when they're skiing? You have precariously snowploughed for X meters and shit. For fuck's sake
We separate your runs, tell you which chair lifts you've taken, clock your time on the chairlift and much more.

Who the fuck wants/needs to know what chairlift they've sat in?? And how long they were in it??? If anyone sat there keeping detailed statistics on what seat on the bus they sat on every morning and how long they sat in it for people would think they were OCD and tell them to see a doctor - stick it on a data mining piece of technology that puts in it a chart and it's suddenly awesome.

And if you're downloading free apps that tell you everything up to the length and girth of your erect penis, the blood pressure and number of thrusts before orgasm and put it in a colour coded pie chart, it's really not surprising that someone has gone to all that trouble because they really want to engage in data mining, presumably so they can sell details about your life to someone else.

And the other insidious thing about this particular kind of app is this thing of reducing everything to statistics - like the way everything in the workplace is preoccupied with performance targets now. What the fuck happened to just having fun? If I went skiing, I'd just want to ski and shit, not sit scrutinising some statistical breakdown of chairlift usage. Instead you're encouraged to reduce everything you do to a string of numbers telling you what you've just done and how you've done it.

Bring back telephone boxes. The stark simplicity of rejected 10ps, the smell of urine and adverts for prostitutes. Those were the days.

You're definitely not alone. I haven't turned my mobile on since my boyfriend gave me his old one. :emb:

The other nasty thing is all the dodgy apps that have come out to helps us civilians to spy on each other. It will probably be used mainly by suspicious spouses. It's still not healthy though. Then there's the stalking angle.

The red telephone box is one of my favourite British icons that have also become an expensive icon to own. People have been quite genius in finding ways to reuse them, turning them into things such as mini bars, showers, toilets and bookshelves

The last time I used a mobile was months ago and that was specificially to send abusive texts to dubs :D

Might switch it back on and carry on where I left off :coffee:

I quite like that thing on the iPhone where you can hold it up in a pub, for example, and it'll tell you what song is playing. That is a very clever piece of programming. But leaving aside all of the other points, they're all made by slaves (and increasingly robots) in Foxconn factories.
The true measure of a man is not his intelligence or how high he rises in this freak establishment. The true measure of a man is this: how quickly he can respond to the needs of others and how much of himself he can give - Philip K. Dick.
