Google is planning a "gaze tracking system" on glasses that track people's reaction to adverts by monitoring their eyeballs.

Privacy campaigners hit out yesterday after details of a patent filed by the technology giant were released in the US.

Under the plans Google would use a "head mounted device" - such as hi-tech glasses - to detect changes in emotion and the advertisments people are looking at.

Tiny cameras would track pupil dilation with the results fed back into a server.

The patent explains that personal data would be removed but "provided to the advertisers as anonymous analytics". It adds: "The inferred emotional state information can be provided to an advertiser so that the advertiser can guage the success of their advertising campaign."

Google is already developing hi-tech glasses, Google Glass, which use display technology to put data in front of your eyes in a tiny prism screen.

And for those who don't know what Google glasses are, they are basically a computer/phone in a pair of glasses, which look to be getting fully released sometime this year.. I'm not too keen on the idea of them myself, but no doubt I'll be getting a pair at some point.

nah, I managed to live two years without carrying my phone around. I didn't get the i-phone. I only answer emails on my lap top and no GPS.

Can't say I blame you Mikey, but my curiosity just gets the better of me.. It's just a step away from contact lenses, and then maybe even full eye implementation, which would be a genuine nightmare scenario.

I do love technology, but it's getting a bit worrisome nowadays though.
