Tesco is set to install hi-tech screens that scan customers' faces in petrol stations so that advertisements can be better targeted at them.

The retailer will introduce the OptimEyes screen, developed by Lord Sugar's Amscreen, to all 450 of its UK petrol stations, in a five-year deal, according to The Grocer magazine.

The screen, positioned at the till, scans the eyes of customers to determine age and gender, and then runs tailored advertisements.

The technology also adjusts adverts depending on the time and date, as well as monitoring customer purchases, The Grocer said.

The screens are predicted to reach a weekly audience of more than five million adults.

Simon Sugar, chief executive of Amscreen, told the industry magazine: "Yes it's like something out of Minority Report, but this could change the face of British retail and our plans are to expand the screens into as many supermarkets as possible."

Privacy campaigners say the system puts forward a "huge consent issue".

Nick Pickles of Big Brother Watch said: "Scanning customers as they walk through the store without customers ever giving permission for them to be scanned in that way ... There's a huge consent issue there."

He said facial recognition technology is getting more advanced all the time, adding that you could be queuing to pay for groceries and a CCTV camera could be "literally scanning who you are".

Mr Pickles added that companies and stores using this system must tell their customers.

"If people were told that every time they walked into a supermarket, or a doctor's surgery or a law firm, that the CCTV camera in the corner is trying to find out who they are, I think that will have a huge impact on what buildings people go into," he said.

Mr Pickles said the only way the systems can be ethically deployed is if consumers opt in to have their image stored and their behaviour tracked, rather than there being no choice in the matter.

Tesco point out the technology is not new, and is used by other retailers.

The system makes a 'guess' at whether someone is male or female, and which of three age categories they fall into.

The retailer stresses that it does not identify customers, no images are collected, and no data is stored.
The true measure of a man is not his intelligence or how high he rises in this freak establishment. The true measure of a man is this: how quickly he can respond to the needs of others and how much of himself he can give - Philip K. Dick.

Do you all remember a thread I started here yonks ago about these little, camera-looking things over all robotic check-outs. I reckon they've been doing it for a while tbh.

Ave a look next time you bother a borg. Hint: it will be at eye-level...surprisingly.

Under the guise of 'fraud prevention' it would also be an ideal opportunity to log your facial features/iris information and such on file with your credit card details. Should they wish to do so and should nobody else have already done this, that is.

No to ID cards, you say? FUCK YOU. Now, shut up and pay us to scan your own shopping, put it in your own bags and piss orf.

I was going to roundly criticize the makers of that vid for the insolence of creating it, presumably without the customers' permission, for the purpose of holding them up for ridicule.

But having watched it, and seen the clip of 'em, they're asking for it!

Need to check the laws - it's not long since people, apart from the government, weren't allowed to even film you without permission.

About 12 years ago, I was outside work, sitting on a wall in my break, smoking a cigarette, and some official bod across the road took out a camera, and stood there blatantly filming me. I knew he was waiting for me to chuck my cigarette butt on the pavement, where a lot of my work colleagues had left a mountain of dog ends before me. But I took my time smoking it, then pulled my portable ash-tray out of my pocket and disappointed him. I then shouted over that he'd forgotten to ask my consent to film me, and he shouted back that the reason he didn't need my consent was because he was 'The Government'.

If I spot any such cameras at the till, I'll kick up a fuss tell them to turn it off or cover it up. It's yet another encroachment on our privacy.

I remember those times Gilly. :oldfart:
Taking, and particularly using, peoples photographs without their permission was rife with potential lawsuits.

However the legal standard today is that you have no expectation of privacy in a public access area.
I must assume that change was made to accommodate the expansive CCTV industry.

This is it.

It won't stop me throwing a wobbler if I spot a till camera. They'll be able to film a proper performance. :)

How fucking ridiculous is it all getting?
You didn't used to need software to scan who your customers were and what they were buying, your fucking staff knew your customers!
Somehow we regard this as progress?

Jeez.

They can see sales levels from their stock movement & till rolls - why do they need to know who in particular is buying what products?

Just hope they don't start doing it at Ann Summers...embarrassing.

Particularly if they're all linked. :umm:
