Hi Folks,

We have just sent out our first community email ballot to collect your votes on the chat system we shall be opting for. The email will give you a little information on the systems we have been testing, with some very brief pros and cons given for each.

The email also has links to other articles about the email voting system and the chat room vote including a chart displaying the results. At the bottom of each article you can add feedback or ask questions in the comment system.

I voted for blast chat - like the good little Libran I am I looked at all the options and then went for the happy medium! :D

It will take some big donations to cover the video chat Andy it's $30 PM just for the system as we have it in the demo. $80 PM for chat with video. :O

EDIT: Blast Chat is $9.90 PM 20 users No Ads $19.90 PM 50 Users No Ads that's the basic cost there are some options available for a fee for added security and administration.
The Free version doesn't have a private chat option although our system still seems to allow that I think. :conf:

We would be interested to know what you thought of the actual voting process. This vote is also a trial of the balloting system. We should probably have a separate thread for this...
How was the user experience?
What did you like about the email voting?
What didn't you like about it?
Was it straight forward and intuitive?

The experience was of clicking an email, reading, forming a view and hitting an option. Simple :)
I liked the fact that I was being given a vote :)
I didn't like the fact there were no biscwits in the lobby of the polling station :mad:
If you can use email, it couldn't have been more straightforward :)

Hmmm I didnt know there was a monthly license, I thought it was $500 once off. (200+300 for the vid)

it was easy to use n all, the email vote, but i kinda wish it was a private message alert instead of/as well as, cos i dont check my email but once a decade. i only knew cos of this post. also i voted blast chat, im a simple man.

You can make a one off purchase but then you need to host the chat server and manage it etc. which would incur a monthly cost. It's about $399 + $299 for the cams. More info here 123flashchat Prices

Thanks for your thoughts, we will need to have a think about the PM notification. You would still need to use the email to take part in the actual vote. I think we would generally try and post a thread about any current polls being conducted. As part of this vote there is an article on the main website, a forum thread and the email poll. I would say that that combination should cover most members of the community. For a really major issue I would think the forum Announcements system could be used in addition. :attn:

I would agree Blast Chat is nice and simple with a good set of useful features. :cool:

Change my vote to blast then cos only I seem to know how to use IRC and that 123chat licensing is bloody hilarious! I've seen cheaper corporate stuff lol.

You can change your vote it just cancels out the previous one you made. Just open the email and chose one of the other options.

It's quiet a heavy cost for a chat system Andy, which would be OK for a commercial site that was making money from it. Not really ideal for us anti capitalists though. :D
